Solana Spot ETFs Bleed $24.8M as Bitwise and Grayscale Lead Outflows

Solana spot ETFs saw $24.81 million in net outflows during the week of October 5–9, led by Bitwise's BSOL and Grayscale's GSOL. The reversal highlights how sensitive crypto ETF flows are to macro sentiment and rotation toward Bitcoin and Ethereum products.

Solana ETF Outflows Signal Cooling Institutional Appetite

Solana-focused spot exchange-traded funds recorded a combined net outflow of $24.81 million during the trading week of October 5–9, marking a sharp reversal from the steady inflows that had characterized the category in prior weeks.

The bulk of the redemptions came from Bitwise’s BSOL, which saw $20.94 million exit the fund over the five-day stretch. Despite the weekly drawdown, BSOL retains a cumulative historical net inflow of $1.20 billion, underscoring how much ground the fund had gained before this pullback. Grayscale’s SOL Trust (GSOL) followed with $3.75 million in net outflows, leaving its lifetime net inflow at $166 million.

Why the Reversal Matters

Spot SOL ETFs were among the most closely watched product launches of the year, pitched as a bridge for traditional allocators seeking exposure to Solana’s high-throughput blockchain without holding tokens directly. A single week of outflows does not erase that thesis, but it does highlight how sensitive crypto ETF flows have become to broader risk sentiment.

  • Macro overhang: Rate uncertainty and a firmer dollar have pressured high-beta assets, and crypto ETFs are often the first place institutional desks trim exposure.
  • Rotation dynamics: Capital may be rotating back toward Bitcoin and Ethereum products, which offer deeper liquidity and more mature options markets.
  • Seasonality: Early October has historically been a volatile window for digital-asset flows, with rebalancing activity amplifying moves.

Industry Implications

The outflow data carries several signals for the broader market. First, it suggests that the initial novelty premium for SOL ETFs is fading, and flows will increasingly be driven by relative performance versus BTC and ETH products. Second, it puts pressure on issuers to compete on fees, staking yield integration, and marketing — Bitwise and Grayscale are now in a direct battle for the same institutional wallet.

Third, the numbers reinforce that Solana’s ETF story is still a work in progress. The network’s DeFi and memecoin activity remains robust, but translating on-chain energy into sticky ETF inflows requires a narrative that resonates with allocators who care about drawdowns, not just throughput.

What to Watch Next

Attention now turns to whether the outflows are a one-week blip or the start of a sustained trend. Key variables include the path of U.S. interest rates, the performance of SOL relative to BTC and ETH, and any new staking-enabled ETF structures that could make Solana products more yield-competitive. If inflows fail to rebound by month-end, issuers may need to rethink distribution strategies — or accept that Solana ETFs will trade as tactical vehicles rather than core allocations.
