Ethereum ETF Outflows Extend to 10 Straight Sessions
TREE NEWS reports: Ethereum spot exchange-traded funds shed another $85.4 million on October 12, extending a net outflow streak to ten consecutive trading days. BlackRock’s ETHA led the retreat with $75.1 million in daily redemptions, while Grayscale’s Ethereum Mini Trust ETF (ETH) saw $10.3 million exit. Despite the persistent bleed, ETHA’s cumulative net inflow still stands at $12.718 billion, and the Mini Trust retains $2.009 billion in lifetime inflows.
The scale of the drawdown matters less than its persistence. Ten days of one-way traffic suggests a structural shift in how institutional allocators are treating ether exposure, not a single-day risk-off blip.
Why the Selling Pressure Persists
Several forces are converging to keep the pressure on:
- Relative-value rotation: Bitcoin ETFs continue to attract the bulk of institutional flows. When allocators run a barbell strategy, ETH often loses the marginal dollar to BTC, which has a cleaner “digital gold” narrative and deeper options liquidity.
- Staking yield gap: Spot ETH ETFs cannot pass through staking rewards in the U.S. at scale, leaving holders with pure price exposure while on-chain stakers earn 3–4%. For yield-sensitive funds, that’s a real opportunity cost.
- Fee competition: Grayscale’s Mini Trust and BlackRock’s ETHA dominate residual flows, but the broader basket of smaller issuers has seen almost no organic demand since launch, creating a long tail of redemption pressure.
- Macro backdrop: Rate expectations and dollar strength have kept risk appetite selective. Crypto beta is being expressed through BTC first, alt-beta second.
What the Flow Data Actually Signals
It’s tempting to read ten days of outflows as a verdict on Ethereum. That would be a mistake. ETF flows are a lagging indicator of allocator sentiment, not a leading indicator of protocol health. Ethereum’s on-chain fundamentals — L2 settlement volume, restaking TVL, and stablecoin issuance — remain robust. What the data does show is that the ETF wrapper is failing to compete for the marginal institutional dollar against both BTC ETFs and native staking alternatives.
Forward Outlook
Three catalysts could reverse the streak: a U.S. regulatory green light for in-ETF staking, a broader altcoin rotation if BTC dominance peaks, and any ETH-specific narrative shock (e.g., a major L2 upgrade or institutional DeFi adoption headline). Until at least one of those hits, expect the drip of redemptions to continue — and expect issuers to start competing on yield, not just fees.
