Interactive Brokers Launches Crypto Staking, Starting With Ethereum via zerohash

Interactive Brokers has launched a crypto staking service powered by zerohash, starting with Ethereum. The move brings yield-bearing digital assets into a mainstream brokerage account and signals deepening convergence between traditional finance and crypto infrastructure.

Interactive Brokers Enters Crypto Staking With Ethereum Support

Interactive Brokers (NASDAQ: IBKR), one of the largest electronic brokerage firms serving retail and institutional clients, has rolled out a cryptocurrency staking service, with Ethereum (ETH) as the first supported asset. The offering is powered by digital asset infrastructure provider zerohash, which supplies custody, settlement and staking plumbing for the brokerage.

The service is initially available to eligible Interactive Brokers clients, marking another step in the firm’s incremental expansion from crypto trading into crypto yield. Interactive Brokers began offering cryptocurrency trading in 2021 through a partnership with Paxos, and has since steadily widened its digital asset footprint while keeping a compliance-first posture.

Why This Matters

Staking is a natural extension for a mainstream broker. For clients, it converts idle ETH holdings into a yield-bearing position without forcing them to move assets to a crypto-native platform. For Interactive Brokers, it deepens engagement and adds a new revenue line that is less correlated with trading volumes.

  • Distribution advantage: Interactive Brokers brings millions of traditional brokerage accounts to a product category historically confined to crypto exchanges and wallets.
  • Infrastructure outsourcing: By leaning on zerohash, the firm avoids building validator operations in-house — a capital- and compliance-intensive undertaking.
  • Regulatory positioning: Staking-as-a-service remains a contested area in the U.S., making a broker-led, custody-segregated model a useful test case.

The Competitive Landscape

Interactive Brokers is not alone. Robinhood, Coinbase, Kraken, Fidelity and several custodians have built staking products, while traditional asset managers have explored ETH staking through ETFs and institutional vehicles. The differentiator for Interactive Brokers is its client base: older, wealthier and more institutional than the typical crypto-native user. If staking resonates there, it signals that yield on digital assets is becoming a standard brokerage feature rather than a crypto-only novelty.

The choice of ETH as the first asset is also telling. Ethereum’s post-Merge proof-of-stake design makes staking operationally cleaner than many alternatives, and ETH remains the second-most-liquid crypto asset with the deepest institutional familiarity.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Expect the asset list to expand. If ETH staking gains traction, SOL, MATIC and other proof-of-stake assets are logical next steps, subject to regulatory clarity. More importantly, this move reinforces a broader trend: the boundary between traditional brokerage and crypto infrastructure is dissolving. The winners may not be crypto-native firms but regulated intermediaries that can wrap staking, custody and trading into a single familiar account.

Watch three things: whether regulators bless the structure, whether competitors match the offering, and whether staking yields become a meaningful driver of client acquisition for Interactive Brokers. Each answer will shape how quickly staking migrates from crypto exchanges into the mainstream financial stack.
