Nvidia’s $600 Billion Wipeout: AI Alchemy Under Pressure as Crypto Miners Brace

Nvidia lost about $600 billion in market value over 10 days as doubts mount over AI hardware demand. The selloff is spilling into crypto-linked stocks, pressuring GPU-dependent miners and AI infrastructure firms that have pivoted toward high-performance computing hosting.

Nvidia’s $600 Billion Wipeout: AI Alchemy Under Pressure as Crypto Miners Brace

Nvidia’s market capitalization has plunged by roughly $600 billion over the past 10 days, one of the sharpest declines in the company’s history, as investors question whether the explosive demand for AI hardware can be sustained. The selloff rippled across technology stocks and into crypto-linked equities, where GPU-dependent miners and AI infrastructure firms felt the tremors.

The AI Trade Under Scrutiny

The scale of the drawdown reflects growing unease about the “AI alchemy” narrative that has driven Nvidia’s valuation to extraordinary heights. For years, the company’s data-center GPUs have been the backbone of the generative AI boom, with cloud providers and enterprises racing to build out capacity. But the market is now asking whether those orders represent durable demand or a cyclical build-out that could cool as customers digest their purchases.

Nvidia’s challenge is twofold: maintain customers’ willingness to keep buying, and ensure that revenue and profit growth from its next-generation products meet expectations. Any sign of inventory digestion or delayed deployments could amplify volatility.

Crypto Miners and AI Infrastructure Feel the Heat

The crypto mining sector has increasingly pivoted toward AI and high-performance computing (HPC) hosting as a growth story, leveraging existing data-center infrastructure and energy contracts. Companies that have rebranded around AI compute are now exposed to the same demand uncertainty weighing on Nvidia. A pullback in AI capex would hit these hybrid miners particularly hard, as their valuations have come to depend on AI hosting contracts rather than bitcoin production alone.

Meanwhile, decentralized GPU networks and on-chain compute marketplaces—projects that aggregate idle graphics cards for AI inference—could see both opportunity and risk. If centralized AI demand cools, some enterprises may explore cheaper decentralized alternatives; but a broader risk-off move in tech could starve these nascent networks of capital.

Forward Outlook

The coming weeks will be critical. Nvidia’s ability to guide confidently on next-generation product ramps and to demonstrate that AI spending is broadening beyond a handful of hyperscalers will determine whether this is a healthy correction or the start of a deeper unwind. For crypto markets, the key transmission channel is through mining economics and AI-adjacent tokens. Investors should watch GPU pricing trends, data-center utilization rates, and any signs of order cancellations. The AI trade is not dead, but the era of unchecked exuberance may be giving way to a more discriminating phase—one in which execution, not narrative, sets the price.
