Aptos Slashes Inflation to 1.5% but Needs 10x Transaction Growth to Turn Deflationary

Aptos has reduced its annualized net issuance rate to about 1.5% after a March tokenomics overhaul that raised gas fees 10x and cut staking rewards. However, Blockworks Research estimates transaction volume must grow tenfold for the network to become deflationary, underscoring the challenge of balancing security incentives with token scarcity.

Aptos Tokenomics Overhaul Cuts Inflation, But Deflation Remains Distant

Aptos, the layer-1 blockchain developed by former Meta engineers, has seen its annualized net issuance rate fall to approximately 1.5% following a sweeping tokenomics reform implemented in March. The overhaul raised gas fees tenfold, reduced the staking reward rate from 5.19% to 2.6%, and imposed a hard cap of 2.1 billion APT on the total supply.

The report estimates that transaction volume would need to grow roughly tenfold from current levels for the network to achieve net deflation—where token burn from gas fees exceeds new issuance. While the reforms mark a significant step toward supply discipline, they also highlight the delicate balance between security incentives and token scarcity.

What Changed in March

Aptos’s March upgrade represented one of the most aggressive tokenomic adjustments among major layer-1 networks this year. Key changes include:

  • Gas fee increase: A 10x hike in transaction fees, designed to boost the burn rate and make the token more responsive to network demand.
  • Staking reward cut: The staking yield was halved from 5.19% to 2.6%, reducing sell pressure from validators and delegators.
  • Supply cap: A hard ceiling of 2.1 billion APT was introduced, mirroring Bitcoin’s fixed-supply ethos and providing long-term predictability.

These measures collectively lowered the net issuance rate to about 1.5% annualized, down from previous levels that were closer to 5-7%. The goal is to create a more sustainable economic model that rewards long-term holders and aligns validator incentives with network growth.

Why 10x Volume Is a High Bar

The math behind the deflation target is straightforward: for burn to exceed issuance, gas fee revenue must rise sharply. With gas fees already up tenfold, the remaining variable is transaction volume. A tenfold increase is ambitious, especially in a competitive layer-1 landscape where Aptos faces off against Ethereum, Solana, Sui, and other high-throughput chains.

However, Aptos has been making strides in user adoption. Its unique active addresses have grown steadily, and the network has attracted attention for its parallel execution engine (Block-STM) and Move programming language, which offer high throughput and security. The recent launch of several DeFi protocols and NFT projects has also contributed to on-chain activity.

Industry Implications

Aptos’s move reflects a broader trend among layer-1 networks to optimize tokenomics for long-term sustainability. As the market matures, investors are increasingly scrutinizing inflation rates and supply schedules. Projects that can demonstrate credible paths to deflation or low inflation may command a premium.

Yet the trade-off is clear: higher gas fees can deter users, particularly in a market where competing chains offer near-zero fees. Aptos must therefore grow its transaction base rapidly to offset the higher cost per transaction. If it succeeds, it could set a precedent for other chains seeking to balance security budgets with token scarcity.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Looking ahead, the key metric to watch will be Aptos’s transaction volume and gas fee revenue. If the network can sustain a 10x increase in volume—perhaps driven by a breakout DeFi or gaming application—it could achieve deflation and potentially trigger a supply shock. Conversely, if volume stagnates, the 1.5% inflation rate may persist, and the token could face downward pressure.

Additionally, the broader crypto market’s recovery and the pace of institutional adoption will influence Aptos’s trajectory. With its strong technical foundation and recent tokenomic reforms, Aptos is positioning itself as a serious contender in the layer-1 race. But as the report suggests, the path to deflation is steep, and execution will be critical.
