Trump Accounts Could Expand to Under-40s, With $100B in Private Donations Eyed by 2027

Altimeter Capital’s Brad Gerstner is pushing to expand Trump Accounts from under-18s to Americans under 40, with legislation possible in months and private donations projected to hit $100 billion by 2027. The proposal could create a massive retail savings pool with implications for asset managers and crypto-linked products.

Trump Accounts Could Expand to Under-40s, With $100B in Private Donations Eyed by 2027

Brad Gerstner, founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital and a driving force behind the Trump Accounts program, said he is pushing to widen eligibility for the savings initiative from children under 18 to Americans under 40. Gerstner said the legislative effort could advance within months and that proponents are seeking to make the program’s funding mechanism permanent.

Gerstner estimated that private contributions to the program could reach $100 billion by the end of 2027, describing Elon Musk’s pledge to gift SpaceX shares to American children as “just the tip of the iceberg.” Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, relaying the remarks, estimated the expansion could cover roughly 100 million additional people. The broader eligibility remains a legislative proposal, not enacted policy.

Why It Matters for Markets

The proposal sits at the intersection of fiscal policy, household savings and capital markets. A government-backed savings vehicle with a broadened age range would create a long-duration pool of retail capital — a structural tailwind for asset managers, brokerages and, potentially, crypto-linked investment products if digital assets are included in eligible allocations.

The scale is notable: $100 billion in private donations would rival the assets of many mid-sized sovereign wealth funds. If even a fraction flows into equities, ETFs or tokenized assets, the program could reshape retail participation in markets.

  • Retail capital formation: A permanent, publicly branded savings account could normalize investing for younger cohorts.
  • Private-sector funding: Corporate stock pledges — like Musk’s SpaceX contribution — blur the line between philanthropy and shareholder-base building.
  • Crypto adjacency: Any inclusion of digital assets or tokenized funds in eligible investments would be a significant adoption catalyst.

The Crypto Angle

While the program is not a crypto initiative per se, its structure matters for digital-asset markets. A government-endorsed account with private donations and broad eligibility could become a distribution channel for tokenized money-market funds, Bitcoin ETFs or stablecoin-based savings products — if regulators permit. The proposal also signals a political willingness to use market-based vehicles for social policy, a trend that has historically benefited fintech and crypto-native platforms.

Forward Look

Investors should watch three things: whether legislation advances in the coming months, how the funding mechanism is structured (tax incentives versus direct donations), and whether eligible assets are narrowly defined to traditional securities or left open to digital assets. If the expansion passes and funding is made permanent, the program could become one of the largest retail savings pools in the U.S. — and a battleground for asset managers and crypto platforms alike.
