Crypto Liquidations Top $841M in 24 Hours as Longs Get Wiped Out

In the past 24 hours, crypto markets saw $841 million in liquidations, with longs accounting for 82.8%. Bitcoin and Ethereum longs were hit hardest, and Binance dominated with 50.1% of the total.

Massive Long Squeeze Rocks Crypto Markets

In the past 24 hours, cryptocurrency markets witnessed a staggering $841 million in total liquidations across exchanges. A total of 228,165 traders were liquidated, with long positions accounting for the vast majority—$697 million, or 82.8% of the total. Short positions made up the remaining $144 million (17.2%). The sheer scale of the long liquidations suggests a sharp and sudden downward price movement that caught bullish traders off guard.

Bitcoin and Ethereum Lead the Carnage

Bitcoin (BTC) saw approximately $234 million in liquidations, of which a whopping 94.9% were long positions. Ethereum (ETH) followed with $183 million in liquidations, with longs comprising 93.4%. The largest single liquidation event occurred on Binance’s ETHUSDT pair, where a single long position worth $11.85 million was forcibly closed. Binance alone accounted for 50.1% of the total liquidation volume across all exchanges, underscoring its dominant market share in derivatives trading.

Interestingly, the token IRYS stood out with $65.4 million in liquidations, but in a stark contrast, 83.7% of those were short positions. This indicates that while the broader market suffered from a long squeeze, IRYS experienced a short squeeze, likely due to idiosyncratic factors or a sudden price spike.

Market Implications and Analysis

The concentration of liquidations in long positions points to a classic long squeeze, where a rapid price decline triggers a cascade of margin calls, forcing leveraged longs to sell, which further accelerates the downward momentum. Such events are often exacerbated by high leverage and thin liquidity, particularly in the absence of strong buying support. The fact that Bitcoin and Ethereum, the two largest cryptocurrencies by market cap, saw over 90% of liquidations on the long side highlights the prevailing bullish sentiment that had built up prior to the drop.

Binance’s dominance in liquidations is notable. As the largest crypto exchange by trading volume, it naturally hosts a significant portion of leveraged trades. However, the 50.1% share also raises questions about market concentration and the potential for systemic risk if a single platform experiences technical issues or liquidity crunches during volatile periods.

Forward-Looking Perspective

While painful for those liquidated, such deleveraging events can be healthy for the market in the long run, as they flush out excessive leverage and reset funding rates. However, traders should remain cautious. The high proportion of long liquidations suggests that the market may have been overly optimistic, and further volatility could be on the horizon. Key levels to watch include whether Bitcoin and Ethereum can find support and whether open interest stabilizes. Additionally, the contrasting IRYS short squeeze serves as a reminder that altcoins can exhibit independent dynamics, and diversification across assets and strategies remains crucial.

As the market digests this event, attention will turn to whether this is a temporary shakeout or the start of a deeper correction. With macroeconomic factors and regulatory developments always in play, the crypto market’s inherent volatility is unlikely to dissipate anytime soon.
