Ethereum Foundation Sells 2,785 ETH for $6.42M in USDS via CoW Swap

The Ethereum Foundation sold 2,785 ETH for $6.42 million in USDS via CoW Swap, signaling a shift toward yield-bearing stablecoins and MEV-protected execution. The move reflects evolving treasury management strategies among crypto-native organizations.

Ethereum Foundation Offloads 2,785 ETH for USDS

The Ethereum Foundation has sold 2,785 ETH, worth approximately $6.42 million, in exchange for USDS, the stablecoin issued by Sky (formerly MakerDAO). The transaction was executed through CoW Swap, a decentralized exchange aggregator that uses batch auctions and MEV protection. On-chain analytics platform Onchain Lens first flagged the movement, which comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Foundation’s treasury management practices.

Why USDS?

The choice of USDS over USDC or USDT is notable. USDS is the rebranded stablecoin of Sky, which offers a Savings USDS (sUSDS) rate that has recently hovered around 5-6% APY, depending on governance votes. By converting ETH to USDS, the Foundation can park the proceeds in a yield-bearing stablecoin while reducing exposure to ETH price volatility. This aligns with a broader trend among crypto-native treasuries: diversifying into stable assets that generate yield on-chain rather than holding idle fiat.

The use of CoW Swap also signals a preference for MEV-resistant execution. CoW Swap’s batch auction mechanism protects large orders from front-running and sandwich attacks, which is critical for an entity of the Foundation’s size. The sale likely occurred in tranches to minimize market impact, though the exact slippage is unknown.

Market Implications

While $6.42 million is a drop in the bucket for ETH’s daily volume, the Foundation’s sales have historically been viewed as a bellwether for its operational runway. The Foundation has previously stated that it periodically liquidates ETH to fund grants, research, and operational expenses. This sale is consistent with that policy. However, the timing—amid a relatively flat ETH price and growing competition from other smart contract platforms—may raise questions about the Foundation’s confidence in near-term price action.

More importantly, the move highlights the growing institutional adoption of decentralized stablecoins. USDS, despite its controversial origins (the MakerDAO rebrand), has gained traction as a viable alternative to centralized stablecoins. If the Ethereum Foundation continues to use USDS for treasury operations, it could lend legitimacy to the Sky ecosystem and encourage other DAOs to follow suit.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Expect the Foundation to continue diversifying its treasury into stablecoins and yield-bearing assets. The organization has been under pressure to increase transparency around its spending and holdings. This sale, while small, is a step toward more active treasury management. The crypto community will watch closely to see if the Foundation converts more ETH to USDS or other assets, and whether it utilizes sUSDS to earn yield. In the broader context, the Foundation’s use of CoW Swap and USDS underscores the maturation of DeFi infrastructure for large-scale, low-slippage transactions.
