Only 26% of Pumpfun’s Big Winners Pass Routine Trading Checks—Copy Traders May Not Replicate Profits

Bitquery found that only 26% of 3,170 Pumpfun wallet-token positions with at least $100,000 in profit passed conventional trading checks, suggesting many top gains stem from execution advantages rather than replicable skill. Copy traders following these wallets may be chasing profits they cannot reproduce.

Only 26% of Pumpfun’s Big Winners Pass Routine Trading Checks

Bitquery analyzed 3,170 wallet-token positions on Pumpfun that reported at least $100,000 in profit between October 2025 and August 2026, and found that only 26% of these large-profit samples passed conventional trading checks. The finding raises a pointed question for the memecoin ecosystem: are the headline gains replicable, or are they artifacts of privileged execution, insider positioning, or wash trading?

What the Data Suggests

Pumpfun’s low-friction token launch model has produced a steady stream of viral profit screenshots, but the underlying distribution of returns is far less egalitarian. The fact that roughly three-quarters of the largest winners fail routine checks—such as consistent position sizing, plausible entry timing, and non-circular counterparties—suggests that many of these wallets are not simply skilled retail traders. They may be bundled launches, sniper bots, insider allocations, or coordinated wallet clusters.

  • Execution advantage dominates: The most profitable wallets often buy in the earliest blocks, a privilege unavailable to ordinary copy traders.
  • Survivorship bias is severe: Profitable positions are reported; the thousands of losing tokens and wallets are not.
  • Copy trading is structurally disadvantaged: By the time a trade is visible on-chain, the price impact and liquidity conditions have already changed.

Implications for the Memecoin Market

The analysis lands as memecoin trading remains one of the most active—and most extractive—segments of on-chain activity. Platforms like Pumpfun have lowered the barrier to launching a token to near zero, which has expanded opportunity but also concentrated returns among sophisticated actors. For copy-trading tools and social trading products that promise to mirror top wallets, the data is a warning: following a wallet’s visible trades does not replicate its edge, because the edge often lies in information, latency, or capital access that cannot be copied.

Regulators and exchanges have increasingly scrutinized memecoin markets for manipulation and misleading marketing. A finding that most large winners fail basic trading checks could strengthen arguments for disclosure requirements, wallet-labeling standards, and better on-chain analytics in retail-facing products.

Forward Look

The next phase of the memecoin market will likely be defined by better data rather than better narratives. Expect on-chain analytics firms to productize wallet-quality scoring, and expect copy-trading platforms to face pressure to disclose the limitations of mirroring strategies. For traders, the takeaway is sobering: in a market where most large profits come from execution advantages rather than stock-picking skill, the most reliable edge may be recognizing when there is no edge to copy.
