Short Squeeze Wipes Out $137M in 24 Hours as Bitcoin and Ether Liquidations Surge
TREE NEWS reports: In the past 24 hours, cryptocurrency markets witnessed a massive liquidation event totaling $194 million, with short positions accounting for the overwhelming majority. 63,136 traders were liquidated, with short liquidations comprising 70.7% ($137 million) versus long liquidations of 29.3% ($56.85 million). This indicates a strong upward price movement that caught bearish traders off guard.
Bitcoin and Ether Lead the Carnage
Bitcoin (BTC) saw $60.9 million in liquidations, of which 81.5% were shorts. Ether (ETH) followed with $46.1 million, 75.9% shorts. The largest single liquidation occurred on Binance’s ETHUSDT pair—a $9.39 million short position liquidated at $2,348.18. Binance alone accounted for 41.5% of total liquidations, underscoring its dominant role in leveraged trading.
Other cryptocurrencies experienced $17.6 million in liquidations, but with a different skew: 54.5% were longs, suggesting altcoins did not rally as strongly or saw profit-taking.
Market Implications: A Short Squeeze Rally
The data points to a classic short squeeze, where rising prices force short sellers to cover, accelerating upward momentum. This often occurs in low-liquidity environments or ahead of anticipated bullish catalysts. The concentration of short liquidations in BTC and ETH implies that traders were positioned for a pullback that did not materialize, possibly due to favorable macroeconomic news or institutional inflows.
Such events can have lasting effects: they may signal a shift in market sentiment, as bears are forced to reconsider their positions. However, high liquidation volumes also indicate excessive leverage, which can amplify volatility. The crypto market remains fragile, and similar squeezes could occur if leveraged positions build up again.
Forward-Looking Perspective
With shorts heavily liquidated, the market may see a temporary relief rally, but sustainability depends on underlying fundamentals. Traders should watch funding rates and open interest for signs of overheating. If long positions now dominate, a subsequent long squeeze could be on the horizon. Regulatory developments and macroeconomic data will continue to drive sentiment. For now, the bears have been burned, but the battle between bulls and bears is far from over.
