Binance Founder Reveals Lessons from Record-Breaking Breach
TREE NEWS reports: In his first in-depth interview since Binance suffered a $6.3 billion hack—the largest in crypto history—founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao recounted the frantic overnight response that followed the attack, which the FBI has attributed to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group. Speaking on the Talking Tokens podcast, CZ described receiving the alert around midnight in the UAE and immediately mobilizing a two-track crisis plan: contain the breach and calm users.
A Two-Track Crisis Playbook
CZ, no longer involved in day-to-day operations, focused on transparent public communication. “Speed of response and protecting user sentiment are the two overriding priorities,” he said. He stressed that while security incidents are an ever-present risk for any exchange, the key is rapid containment and ensuring users do not panic into a market-wide sell-off.
North Korea and the National Security Dimension
The scale of the attack, CZ argued, elevates crypto security to a national security issue. With tokenized real-world assets, stablecoins, and tokenized Treasuries deeply intertwined with traditional finance, a breach of this magnitude can spill over into the global financial system. “This is not just a Binance problem—it’s a problem for every exchange, every protocol, and ultimately for global financial stability,” he said, noting that North Korean hackers have a long history of targeting traditional banks as well.
The AI Arms Race: Fighting Monsters with Monsters
CZ warned that AI is weaponizing attacks, making them faster and more frequent. “Yesterday alone, four crypto platforms were hit,” he noted. “The only way to fight a monster is to become a monster.” He called for the industry to invest heavily in AI-driven defense and to form a global security alliance for intelligence sharing and rapid cross-platform fund freezing. “This is an engineering problem we can solve,” he added.
Resilience and the Road Ahead
Despite the massive loss, Binance covered all losses and saw net inflows within 24 hours. CZ attributed this to transparent communication and user trust. “Every crisis is a catalyst for technological evolution,” he said. “Once you hit bottom, the only direction is up.”
