Anchorage Digital Files for CFTC Swap Dealer Registration, Plans One-Year BTC and ETH Options

Anchorage Digital has applied for a CFTC swap dealer license through its subsidiary, aiming to offer one-year BTC and ETH options. The move could bring longer-dated crypto derivatives into the regulated U.S. market, providing institutional investors with new hedging tools and greater regulatory certainty.

Anchorage Digital Moves to Register as Swap Dealer

Anchorage Digital has submitted an application to the National Futures Association (NFA) to register its subsidiary, Anchorage Digital Swap Dealer, LLC, as a swap dealer with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The move is part of the firm’s plan to offer longer-dated Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) options with tenors of up to one year.

The application, if approved, would make Anchorage one of the few federally chartered crypto banks to hold a swap dealer license, allowing it to provide institutional clients with customized derivative products that are currently scarce in the market.

Why a Swap Dealer License Matters

A swap dealer registration with the CFTC subjects the firm to comprehensive regulatory oversight, including capital requirements, risk management, reporting, and business conduct standards. For institutional investors, this brings a level of regulatory certainty that is often missing in offshore derivative offerings.

Anchorage’s existing status as a national trust bank already provides a strong regulatory foundation. Adding a swap dealer license would enable the firm to offer derivatives that reference digital assets, potentially bridging the gap between traditional finance and crypto markets.

Longer-Dated Options: A Market Gap

Currently, the crypto options market is dominated by short-term contracts, with most activity concentrated in weekly and monthly expiries. Longer-dated options (up to one year) are less common, partly due to the lack of regulated venues and the complexity of managing risk over extended periods.

Anchorage’s proposed one-year options would give institutional investors more flexibility to hedge longer-term exposure, execute structured products, and manage volatility over a longer horizon. This could appeal to miners, treasuries, and funds seeking to manage risk without rolling short-term positions.

Regulatory Context and Implications

The application comes amid a broader push by U.S. regulators to bring crypto derivatives into the regulated perimeter. The CFTC has been actively asserting jurisdiction over digital asset derivatives, and recent enforcement actions have clarified that many crypto tokens are commodities.

Anchorage’s move aligns with this trend. By seeking a swap dealer license, the firm is signaling that it intends to operate within the U.S. regulatory framework, potentially setting a precedent for other crypto-native firms.

However, the approval process may take time. The NFA and CFTC will review the application, and Anchorage will need to demonstrate compliance with all applicable rules. The outcome could influence how other institutions approach crypto derivatives.

Competitive Landscape

Anchorage is not alone in targeting the institutional crypto derivatives space. Several exchanges and prime brokers are expanding their offerings, but few have pursued a swap dealer license. If successful, Anchorage could gain a first-mover advantage in offering regulated, longer-dated options.

Forward-Looking Perspective

The filing represents a significant step toward institutionalizing crypto derivatives in the U.S. If approved, Anchorage’s swap dealer status could encourage more traditional financial institutions to participate in the market, knowing that their counterparties are regulated.

In the longer term, this could lead to greater liquidity and price discovery in crypto options, particularly for longer tenors. It also underscores the growing convergence between traditional finance and digital assets, with regulated entities playing a central role.

As the regulatory environment evolves, Anchorage’s application will be closely watched as a bellwether for how crypto firms can navigate the complex landscape of U.S. derivatives regulation.
