VanEck CEO: Single-Token Crypto ETF Era Is Over, Gold and Bitcoin Become Core Allocations

VanEck CEO Jan van Eck says the era of single-token crypto ETFs is largely over, with future growth coming from diversified and thematic products. He also sees gold and bitcoin as essential portfolio allocations and doubts AI can solve America's debt crisis.

VanEck CEO: Single-Token Crypto ETF Era Is Over, Gold and Bitcoin Become Core Allocations

In a wide-ranging interview, VanEck CEO Jan van Eck declared that the era of launching single-token cryptocurrency ETFs is essentially over, signaling a maturation of the digital asset investment landscape. He also emphasized that gold and bitcoin are becoming important portfolio allocations, while dismissing AI as a solution to America’s mounting debt crisis.

The End of the Single-Token ETF Boom

Van Eck’s remarks come after a wave of spot bitcoin and ether ETF approvals in the U.S., which opened the floodgates for institutional capital but also saturated the market with plain-vanilla products. The next phase will be dominated by diversified, actively managed, or thematic crypto ETFs rather than one-off token trackers.

“The single-token ETF is largely a done story,” van Eck said, suggesting that issuers will need to innovate with baskets, income-generating strategies, or tokenized real-world assets to attract flows. The shift reflects a maturing market where investors seek exposure to the broader crypto ecosystem rather than isolated bets.

Gold and Bitcoin as Twin Hedges

Van Eck highlighted that both gold and bitcoin are increasingly viewed as essential allocations in a diversified portfolio, particularly amid persistent inflation and geopolitical uncertainty. He noted that VanEck’s own research supports a strategic allocation to bitcoin, not just as a speculative asset but as a store of value and portfolio diversifier.

The dual endorsement of gold and bitcoin underscores a growing consensus among institutional investors that traditional safe havens and digital alternatives can coexist. This view is likely to accelerate the adoption of crypto within wealth management and pension funds.

AI Won’t Solve the Debt Problem

On the macroeconomic front, van Eck poured cold water on the idea that artificial intelligence will generate enough productivity gains to rescue the U.S. from its fiscal trajectory. He argued that debt levels are too high and that structural reforms, not technological breakthroughs, are needed to address the deficit.

His comments add to a broader debate about the economic impact of AI, with some optimists betting on a productivity boom while skeptics warn of unrealistic expectations. For crypto investors, the takeaway is that macro risks remain elevated, reinforcing the case for hard assets like bitcoin and gold.

Implications for the Crypto Industry

The CEO’s outlook suggests that the ETF market is entering a consolidation phase, where scale and differentiation will determine winners. Smaller issuers may struggle, while large players with diverse product suites could dominate. Meanwhile, the endorsement of bitcoin as a core allocation could further legitimize the asset class among institutional allocators.

As the crypto industry matures, the focus is shifting from product proliferation to sustainable investment strategies. VanEck’s perspective offers a roadmap for what comes next: fewer single-token ETFs, more sophisticated offerings, and a renewed emphasis on bitcoin as a portfolio staple.
