Samsung’s HBM Surge to Offset 2027 Memory Slowdown, Analyst Says

Mirae Asset Securities analyst Kim Young-gun projects Samsung's HBM shipments and ASPs will surge 57% and 49% in 2027, offsetting slower general-purpose memory growth. Strong AI demand and currency headwinds shape the outlook, with implications for semiconductor and crypto infrastructure sectors.

Samsung’s HBM Momentum to Counter Memory Market Softening

September 7 — Samsung Electronics’ aggressive expansion in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI applications is expected to offset a slowdown in general-purpose memory growth by 2027. The analyst projects that Samsung’s HBM shipment volumes and average selling prices (ASPs) will surge 57% and 49%, respectively, in 2027, far outpacing the anticipated 16% shipment growth and 20% ASP growth for conventional memory chips.

AI-Driven Demand Reshapes Memory Mix

The forecast underscores a structural shift in the memory industry, where AI accelerators and data centers increasingly demand HBM’s high bandwidth and energy efficiency. Samsung, a leading supplier of HBM to major AI chipmakers like NVIDIA, is strategically pivoting its production capacity toward HBM to capture higher margins and lock in long-term supply agreements. This move is particularly crucial as the broader memory market faces cyclical headwinds from maturing consumer electronics and PC demand.

Kim noted that while a stronger Korean won against the U.S. dollar could pressure Samsung’s earnings, the overall profit trajectory remains robust. Mirae Asset Securities trimmed its operating profit forecasts for Samsung by 5.7% for 2026 and 4.2% for 2027, adjusting to KRW 370.057 trillion and KRW 535.682 trillion, respectively. These revisions reflect currency headwinds but still imply healthy year-over-year growth, driven largely by HBM’s expanding contribution.

Implications for the Semiconductor and Crypto Sectors

For the broader semiconductor ecosystem, Samsung’s HBM ramp is a bellwether for AI infrastructure spending. Strong HBM demand signals sustained investment in AI compute, which indirectly benefits blockchain networks that rely on high-performance hardware for mining or node operations. Additionally, Samsung’s strategic focus on HBM over commodity DRAM could tighten supply for general-purpose memory, potentially raising prices for other segments—an outcome that may affect the cost structures of crypto mining rigs and data centers.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Looking ahead, Samsung’s ability to execute on HBM yield improvements and secure next-generation customer wins will be critical. The company faces competition from SK Hynix and Micron, but its vertical integration and manufacturing scale provide a competitive edge. Investors should monitor quarterly HBM revenue disclosure and any shifts in AI chip demand, as these will likely determine whether Samsung can sustain its premium valuation in the memory market. For crypto and tech investors, Samsung’s trajectory offers a proxy for AI hardware demand, making it a key stock to watch in the coming years.
