Bitcoin as the Core Asset of the Dollar Debasement Era

US debt cannot be resolved through austerity, leaving inflation and financial repression as the only paths to debasement. Gold has become the top central bank reserve asset, and Bitcoin is following the same trajectory. With low hedging costs and incomplete institutional adoption, the structural case for both assets remains compelling.

Bitcoin and Gold: Twin Hedges Against Sovereign Debt Expansion

US sovereign debt cannot be resolved through austerity alone. The structural math leaves only two mechanisms: inflation and financial repression, both of which erode the real purchasing power of fiat currency. This is the central thesis driving a growing institutional case for hard assets — and increasingly, for Bitcoin alongside gold.

The Reserve Asset Shift

Gold has already reclaimed its position as the top central bank reserve asset by net accumulation, with central banks — particularly in emerging markets — buying at multi-decade highs. Bitcoin is traveling the same trajectory, propelled by sovereign accumulation, spot ETF inflows, and a maturing regulatory framework. The difference is one of degree, not direction: Bitcoin has not yet surpassed gold, but it is following the same adoption curve that gold traversed over centuries, compressed into years.

Why Institutions Are Underweight

Despite the structural case, most institutional portfolios remain materially underallocated to both assets. The reason is not disagreement on the thesis but operational inertia: mandates, risk frameworks, and compliance infrastructure were built for a pre-Bitcoin world. The cost of hedging against debt debasement — via gold or Bitcoin — remains low relative to the downside risk of staying in fiat-denominated assets. That asymmetry is the core opportunity.

NDV’s Three-Year Validation

NDV, a fund that has spent three years testing this framework, holds Bitcoin and related assets explicitly as a hedge against sovereign debt risk. Its approach emphasizes discipline and long-horizon positioning over tactical trading — a stance that aligns with the structural, multi-year nature of the debasement trade. The fund’s experience suggests that the thesis is not a short-term macro call but a portfolio construction principle.

Forward Outlook

The path forward depends on three variables: the pace of central bank Bitcoin adoption, the depth of ETF and custody infrastructure, and the clarity of regulatory frameworks in major jurisdictions. Each is trending favorably. If the debasement thesis holds — and the arithmetic of US debt suggests it must — Bitcoin’s role as a core, low-cost hedge will only strengthen. The question for institutions is no longer whether to allocate, but how much and how soon.
