Grayscale Files to Convert Litecoin Trust Into NYSE Arca ETF Under Ticker LTCN

Grayscale has filed with the SEC to convert its Litecoin Trust into a spot ETF listed on NYSE Arca under the ticker LTCN. The move extends the firm's trust-to-ETF playbook to one of the oldest cryptocurrencies and could set a template for other altcoin ETF conversions.

Grayscale Moves to Convert Litecoin Trust Into a Spot ETF

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has received a filing from Grayscale Investments seeking to convert its Litecoin Trust into a spot exchange-traded fund. The proposed product would be renamed the “Grayscale Litecoin Trust ETF” and list on NYSE Arca under the ticker LTCN.

The move marks another step in Grayscale’s broader campaign to migrate its suite of single-asset trusts into ETF wrappers, a strategy that began in earnest with its landmark court victory over the SEC regarding the conversion of its Bitcoin Trust and continued with the successful launches of spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.

Why Litecoin, and Why Now

Litecoin occupies an unusual position in the digital asset landscape. Launched in 2011 as a fork of Bitcoin, it is one of the oldest continuously operating blockchains and is frequently described by regulators and market participants as a commodity rather than a security. That classification matters enormously: the SEC’s approval of spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs hinged on the existence of regulated futures markets and the agency’s comfort with the underlying asset’s legal status.

Litecoin’s long trading history, deep liquidity on U.S. exchanges and lack of a pre-sale or centralized issuer give it a relatively clean regulatory profile. That could make it a more straightforward candidate for approval than assets still entangled in classification disputes.

Implications for the ETF Landscape

  • Broadening the altcoin ETF pipeline: A successful LTCN conversion would set a template for other single-asset trusts tracking assets such as Solana, XRP and Chainlink, several of which already have pending or anticipated filings.
  • Institutional access: An ETF structure offers lower fees, tighter tracking and easier access through traditional brokerage accounts compared with the trust’s current premium/discount dynamics.
  • Competitive pressure: Grayscale faces growing competition from issuers like Bitwise, VanEck and 21Shares, which have been aggressive in filing for niche crypto ETFs.

What to Watch Next

The SEC’s review process will involve a public comment period and could stretch across multiple deadline extensions, as seen with previous crypto ETF applications. Key questions include whether the agency views Litecoin’s market structure as sufficiently resistant to manipulation and whether the current leadership’s evolving posture toward digital assets accelerates or complicates the timeline.

If approved, LTCN would not just expand investor choice — it would signal that the ETF wrapper is becoming the default institutional on-ramp for a widening array of established cryptocurrencies, further blurring the line between traditional finance and the digital asset economy.
