New York Life Brings Its First Tokenized Fund to Avalanche via Centrifuge

New York Life Investment Management is bringing its first tokenized fund, HYB, to Avalanche through Centrifuge, putting a US high-yield corporate bond strategy on-chain for eligible investors. The move signals that institutional-grade credit tokenization has moved from pilot to production, with yield-bearing collateral emerging as the next frontier in RWA.

Institutional Credit Goes On-Chain

New York Life Investment Management (NYLIM) is bringing its first tokenized fund, HYB, to the Avalanche blockchain through Centrifuge, the tokenization platform for real-world assets. The fund wraps NYLIM’s US high-yield corporate bond strategy, giving eligible investors direct on-chain access to institutional-grade credit — the same asset class that has long been a staple of insurance balance sheets and pension portfolios, now settling on a public blockchain.

Why This Matters

The move is notable less for the size of the fund than for who is doing it. New York Life is a 180-year-old mutual insurer with roughly $700 billion in assets under management. When an institution of that pedigree tokenizes a credit strategy, it signals that the on-chain RWA trade has moved past pilot programs and proof-of-concepts into production infrastructure.

Three structural shifts underpin the announcement:

  • Yield-bearing collateral is the new battleground. Tokenized Treasuries and credit funds are increasingly used as collateral in DeFi lending markets, and high-yield corporate debt offers a higher carry than the short-duration government paper that dominated earlier RWA products.
  • Centrifuge’s role as a bridge. Centrifuge has spent years building the legal and technical plumbing to wrap regulated fund structures into on-chain tokens. Its model — issuing tokens representing shares in a regulated vehicle rather than the underlying bonds themselves — is becoming the template for TradFi-to-DeFi distribution.
  • Avalanche’s institutional push. Avalanche has courted asset managers with subnet architecture and compliance-friendly tooling. Landing a New York Life affiliate is a meaningful win in the competition among L1s for tokenized asset flows.

The Caveats

Access remains permissioned. “Eligible investors” in this context typically means accredited or institutional buyers, not retail. Liquidity on-chain will depend on whether secondary markets develop, and the fund’s high-yield credit exposure carries real default risk — something tokenization does not eliminate, only redistributes.

It is also worth noting that tokenized fund shares are not the same as native crypto assets. They trade within transfer restrictions, rely on off-chain administrators, and depend on the continued cooperation of regulated intermediaries.

What to Watch

The next test is composability. If HYB tokens can be used as collateral in DeFi protocols, pledged in structured products, or swapped permissionlessly among qualified holders, the product becomes more than a wrapped fund — it becomes a building block. If they sit idle in wallets, tokenization remains a settlement upgrade rather than a financial innovation.

Expect more insurers and asset managers to follow. The RWA sector has already attracted billions in tokenized Treasuries and money market funds; high-yield credit is the logical next frontier, and the first movers will set the standards others adopt.
