Unified Methodology Reveals Stark Valuation Gap Between Top Derivatives Protocols
TREE NEWS reports: Hyperliquid and Lighter, two leading perpetual derivatives protocols, have long been compared on revenue and valuation metrics. However, most comparisons suffer from inconsistent methodologies—one side uses circulating supply while the other uses fully diluted supply, or one counts gross fees while the other counts net profit. A new analysis from GLC Research, applying a unified framework developed with the Hyperliquid Research Consortium (HRC) and HSI, reveals that Lighter trades at approximately 88.1x annualized earnings, while Hyperliquid trades at 43.3x—roughly double.
The Unified Framework
The analysis adopts Outstanding Token Supply (OTS) as the valuation base—a metric between circulating and fully diluted supply that includes team and investor allocations (even if locked) while excluding reserves, community rewards, and burned tokens. Hyperliquid’s OTS valuation stands at $43 billion, while Lighter’s is $2.85 billion based on a LIT price of $3.896 as of October 6, 2026.
For earnings, both protocols use September 2026 monthly data annualized. Hyperliquid generated $83.5 million in revenue and $82.8 million in profit, yielding $994 million annualized. Lighter’s September revenue was $4.44 million, with $2.7 million used for buybacks—the proxy for profit—annualizing to $32.4 million.
Implications and Limitations
The higher P/E multiple for Lighter suggests the market anticipates stronger growth or perceives a different risk profile. A higher multiple can be justified by faster expected growth, while a lower multiple often reflects a larger, more mature earnings base. Importantly, the analysis does not conclude that either token is mispriced; P/E ratios inherently reflect market expectations for growth, margins, and risk.
Several caveats apply. Lighter’s earnings are approximated using buyback amounts; if the protocol retains some revenue, its true earnings—and thus its P/E—would be lower. Using total revenue instead of buybacks yields a P/E of approximately 54x. Additionally, the single-month sample window may not reflect long-term trends, and neither protocol’s outstanding ecosystem reserve distributions are included in OTS calculations.
Forward-Looking Perspective
As derivatives DEXs mature, unified valuation frameworks will become essential for credible cross-protocol comparisons. The HRC/HSI framework represents a significant step toward standardizing how token-based protocols are evaluated. Investors should watch whether Lighter’s premium multiple compresses as its earnings base grows, or whether it sustains on the back of superior growth prospects. For Hyperliquid, the question is whether its larger, more established earnings stream can continue to justify a lower multiple—or whether the market will re-rate it upward as the ecosystem expands.
