AI Borrowing Spree Floods US Credit Markets as SpaceX, Broadcom, Oracle Seek $150B

SpaceX, Broadcom and Oracle have sought over $150 billion in AI-related financing in under a week, saturating public bond markets and pushing deals into private credit and off-balance-sheet vehicles. Record CDS levels and widening CCC spreads signal that credit markets are repricing concentrated AI risk faster than rating agencies.

AI’s $150 Billion Week Tests the Limits of Public Debt Markets

In less than a week, SpaceX, Broadcom and Oracle have collectively sought more than $150 billion in financing tied to AI chip and data-center buildouts, pushing the public bond market toward saturation and driving a growing share of deals into private credit and off-balance-sheet special purpose vehicles. The wave includes a roughly $50 billion Broadcom-linked package for OpenAI’s custom chip program, a $42 billion senior secured deal for Anthropic alongside an $18 billion subordinated tranche, an Oracle off-balance-sheet structure for GPU procurement, and SpaceX’s pursuit of about $10 billion in bank loans plus $30 billion of investment-grade bonds.

Credit Markets Reprice the AI Trade

The strain is showing up most clearly in credit derivatives. Oracle’s five-year credit default swap closed at a record 261 basis points, implying a five-year default probability above 20%. SpaceX’s five-year CDS jumped to a record 197 basis points, roughly double its level at the time of its June listing, even as rating agencies keep the company at investment grade. Broadcom’s five-year CDS widened to a record 136 basis points.

Spillovers are spreading beyond technology credit. Ten-year Treasury yields have climbed back to 5.31%, with the 30-year hovering near 5.70%, as AI borrowers willingly pay high single-digit rates to fund compute. Goldman Sachs credit strategist Rich Privorotsky describes the dynamic as a “battle for capital,” warning the crowding-out effect could be substantial. CCC-rated dollar spreads closed near 998 basis points, up 219 basis points in three months and sitting in the 99th percentile of the past year, while investment-grade index spreads have held steady around 80 basis points — a sharp divergence that suggests stress is concentrating in the weakest issuers.

Why Investors Should Care

The core issue is correlation. As T. Rowe Price fixed-income portfolio manager Steven Kohlenstein notes, risk is increasingly concentrated in a small group of companies that all ultimately depend on the same AI investment cycle, even when the exposure is spread across different issuers, sectors and financing structures. Much of the new debt is being routed through private credit vehicles sponsored by firms such as Apollo and Blackstone, using SPVs whose collateral is rapidly depreciating GPUs rather than long-lived buildings.

  • Watch hyperscaler earnings: The next quarter of free cash flow will determine whether AI capex can increasingly self-fund, or whether capital gets rationed elsewhere in the economy.
  • Track CDS and CCC spreads: These are pricing AI credit risk faster than rating agencies, and the gap between them and investment-grade spreads is a key stress signal.
  • Mind duration and correlation: Rising Treasury yields and concentrated AI credit exposure mean traditional diversification may offer less protection than investors assume.
  • Monitor off-balance-sheet structures: SPV-based financing obscures where ultimate risk sits, complicating credit analysis across the AI supply chain.

For now, Oracle stands out as the perceived weakest link, having turned to external balance sheets to fund chip purchases its own books can no longer support cheaply. OpenAI and Anthropic have limited standalone balance sheets, and SpaceX has returned to capital markets three times in four months. The AI buildout is no longer just an equity story — it is now a credit cycle in the making.
