Honor’s New Gaming Phone Prices Jump as Memory Costs Surge

Honor's new WIN2 gaming phone starts at 5,499 yuan, up 1,500 yuan from its predecessor, as smartphone memory prices surge over 80% quarter-on-quarter. The price hikes reflect broader cost pressures across the gaming phone segment, with rivals OnePlus and iQOO also raising prices. Memory chip makers stand to gain, while smartphone OEMs face margin compression.

Honor Launches WIN2 Series with Steep Price Hikes

Honor unveiled its second-generation gaming smartphones, the WIN2 and WIN RT2, in Hangzhou on October 21, less than a year after the debut of the original WIN series. The WIN2 features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 Supreme Edition chip with a CPU clocked up to 5.01GHz, LPDDR5X Ultra memory, and UFS 4.1 storage. It also sports a dual-fan active cooling system, a 2K 185Hz display, and a 10,100mAh battery with 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. The WIN RT2 bumps the battery to 12,070mAh.

But the standout takeaway is pricing. The WIN2’s 12GB+256GB variant starts at 5,499 yuan, up 1,500 yuan from the previous generation’s 3,999 yuan. The 12GB+512GB and 16GB+512GB versions are priced at 6,299 yuan and 6,999 yuan, increases of 1,900 yuan and 2,300 yuan respectively. Even after subsidies, the effective starting price is 4,999 yuan. Competitors are following suit: OnePlus 16 and iQOO 16 have also raised prices by 1,800 to 2,800 yuan for comparable memory configurations.

Memory Prices Soar Over 80%

The culprit is a sharp rise in memory costs. Counterpoint Research data shows smartphone memory prices jumped more than 80% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter of 2026. Combined with upgrades to flagship chips and other hardware, the bill of materials for gaming phones has risen substantially. For a segment that has long competed on flagship chips and large memory, the cost pressure is particularly acute.

The broader smartphone market is already in a replacement-driven slowdown, with consumers holding onto devices longer. Even with performance upgrades, convincing users to upgrade en masse in the short term is difficult. In response, Honor is expanding its gaming ecosystem beyond phones, launching a gaming tablet, earbuds, and a game controller to complement its handsets.

Market Implications

The memory price surge is a double-edged sword for equities. Memory chip makers such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology stand to benefit from higher average selling prices and improved margins. Their earnings revisions could surprise to the upside in coming quarters. However, smartphone OEMs face margin compression unless they can pass costs to consumers, which the latest price hikes attempt to do. Companies heavily reliant on mid-range and budget segments may see demand destruction.

In the bond market, the impact is indirect. Higher memory prices contribute to goods inflation, which could influence central bank policy if sustained. But the effect is likely too small to shift rate expectations on its own. For crypto, there is no direct read-through, though a broader risk-off sentiment from inflation concerns could weigh on digital assets.

Commodities could see marginal demand shifts, but the main story is in tech equities. Investors should watch for earnings guidance from memory makers and smartphone brands. Supply chain data points, such as DRAM and NAND contract prices, will be key indicators.

Key Takeaways

  • Honor’s WIN2 series sees price increases of up to 2,300 yuan due to soaring memory costs.
  • Memory prices rose over 80% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2026, pressuring smartphone margins.
  • Memory chip makers benefit; smartphone OEMs face margin and demand risks.
  • Watch DRAM/NAND pricing and earnings guidance for sector direction.
