Standard Chartered Takes Full Control of Zodia Custody in Institutional Crypto Push

Standard Chartered is folding Zodia Custody into its Securities Services business while spinning software and services into Zodia Solutions under SC Ventures. The restructuring reflects banks' growing view of digital-asset custody as a core institutional service, arriving as real-world asset tokenization accelerates.

Standard Chartered Consolidates Its Crypto Custody Ambitions

Standard Chartered has signed an agreement to acquire full ownership of Zodia Custody, the institutional digital-asset custodian it previously backed through a joint venture. Under the restructuring, the custody operations will be folded into the bank’s Securities Services division, while the software and professional-services arms will be spun into a separate entity, Zodia Solutions, operating under SC Ventures.

The move marks a significant consolidation of the London-based banking group’s digital-asset strategy, moving custody from a venture-style bet into the core institutional securities business.

Why This Matters for Institutional Crypto

The reorganization signals that large banks increasingly view digital-asset custody as a core service line rather than an experimental side project. By absorbing Zodia Custody into Securities Services, Standard Chartered aligns digital-asset safekeeping with its traditional custody, fund administration, and prime-brokerage offerings — a structure that mirrors how institutional clients already think about their portfolios.

  • Closer integration: Custody sits alongside traditional securities services, easing onboarding for asset managers seeking one-stop institutional access.
  • Separation of software: Zodia Solutions under SC Ventures keeps the technology and consulting business nimble and able to serve third parties beyond the bank.
  • Regulatory alignment: Folding custody into the bank’s regulated core may simplify compliance and licensing across jurisdictions.

The Broader RWA and Tokenization Context

This restructuring lands as real-world asset tokenization accelerates. Banks including JPMorgan, Citi, and BNY Mellon have been building tokenized deposit and asset platforms, and institutional demand for regulated digital-asset custody has grown alongside tokenized money-market funds, bonds, and private credit products. A bank-owned, fully integrated custodian positions Standard Chartered to capture custody, settlement, and administration fees as tokenized assets scale.

The split also reflects a maturing market: software-as-a-service and advisory offerings can be sold independently of a banking license, while regulated custody benefits from being embedded in a balance-sheet-strong institution.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Expect further consolidation as banks decide whether digital assets belong in a venture incubator or the core franchise. Standard Chartered’s choice — custody in the bank, software in the venture arm — offers a template other institutions may follow. The key test will be whether the integrated custodian can win mandates from asset managers and tokenization platforms that prize both regulatory comfort and technological agility. If it can, Zodia’s absorption could mark a turning point where crypto custody stops being a novelty and becomes a standard line item in institutional securities services.
