Fed Decision Looms as Consumer Confidence Rebounds and Nasdaq Leads Tech Rally

U.S. consumer confidence jumped to 91.7 in October from a revised 84.2 in September, while core capital goods orders rose 0.5% month-over-month, signaling resilient business investment. The Nasdaq outpaced major indexes as markets await the Federal Reserve’s rate decision on Wednesday, with mega-cap tech earnings from Microsoft and Alphabet also on deck.

Market Implications

The improved sentiment and capital spending data suggest the U.S. economy retains momentum despite elevated borrowing costs. However, the expectations index at 72.6 indicates consumers remain cautious about the future, and the Conference Board survey shows households still plan to cut spending on services and durable goods over the next six months. For crypto markets, which have become increasingly sensitive to macroeconomic data, the Fed’s guidance will be critical in determining whether risk assets can sustain their recent recovery.

Bitcoin hovered around $80,683, up 0.50% in 24 hours, while Ether traded near $2,344, up 0.63%. The total crypto market cap stood at approximately $2.72 trillion, down 2.00% over the same period. Liquidation clusters above $81,200-$81,700 for BTC and $2,365-$2,380 for ETH could trigger volatility if prices continue to climb. Notably, Glassnode data shows the aggregate cost basis for corporate BTC treasuries at about $80,200, with Strategy’s average cost at $75,446, meaning current prices sit just above these levels.

Tech Earnings and AI Spending in Focus

Microsoft and Alphabet report after the close on Tuesday, with investors scrutinizing cloud growth, capital expenditures, and free cash flow for signs that AI investments are translating into profits. The broader tech rally, led by the Nasdaq, reflects optimism around AI but remains vulnerable to any hawkish surprise from the Fed. Meanwhile, SoFi surged 13.42% on strong quarterly results and raised guidance, while UPS gained 5.75% on improved revenue per piece. Robinhood’s after-hours report showed revenue growth but a 55% decline in crypto revenue, highlighting the uneven recovery in digital asset trading.

Forward Look

With Treasury yields near 5%, the Fed’s tone on inflation and future rate paths will be pivotal. Any signal of prolonged tightness could pressure tech valuations and crypto assets alike. Conversely, a dovish tilt might extend the rally, particularly if earnings from Microsoft and Alphabet confirm that AI spending is yielding returns. Investors should watch the $81,200-$81,700 BTC liquidation zone and ETH’s $2,365-$2,380 resistance for short-term direction, while keeping an eye on consumer spending data to validate the confidence rebound.
