China’s Listed Firms Post Record Profits as AI and Robotics Surge

China’s A-share market delivered its strongest earnings performance in three years, with 5,224 listed companies on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges reporting combined net profit of 5.1 trillion yuan ($700 billion) for the first three quarters of 2026, up 8.5% year-on-year. Revenue rose 5.8% to 56.6 trillion yuan, marking the highest growth rate since 2022.

Sector Breakdown: Tech Leads the Charge

The standout performer was the STAR Market (科创板), where net profit surged 474.6%, reflecting the concentrated presence of semiconductor, AI, and advanced manufacturing firms. The ChiNext (创业板) board saw profit growth of 22.7%. The artificial intelligence sector was a key driver, with net profit jumping 281.0% year-on-year—14.5 percentage points faster than in the half-year report. Robotics and smart wearable device segments grew 94.8% and 63.2%, respectively.

Overall, 73% of companies reported profitability, a sign of broad-based improvement despite ongoing economic headwinds in the property sector and weak consumer demand.

Implications for Markets and Policy

The earnings data suggest that China’s push into high-tech manufacturing and AI is beginning to yield tangible financial results. The stellar growth in STAR Market profits—albeit from a lower base—indicates that policy support for semiconductor self-sufficiency and AI development is translating into revenue for listed companies. This could bolster investor confidence in China’s technology sector, which has been volatile amid regulatory uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.

For global markets, the numbers reinforce the narrative of an AI-driven capex cycle that extends beyond the US. China’s robotics and smart wearable growth also points to increasing automation and consumer tech adoption.

Forward-Looking Perspective

While the headline profit growth is impressive, sustainability remains a question. The AI and robotics sectors benefit from government subsidies and preferential policies, and their profitability may face pressure once these incentives normalize. Moreover, the broader market still faces challenges from a property downturn and export uncertainties. Investors will watch whether the tech-led earnings momentum can offset weakness in traditional sectors.

For crypto and RWA markets, China’s tech earnings strength could indirectly support demand for blockchain-based supply chain finance and tokenized assets, as profitable firms seek more efficient capital management. However, regulatory barriers remain high. The data underscores the growing economic weight of AI and automation—themes that resonate with decentralized compute and AI-crypto convergence narratives globally.
