Goldman TMT Conference Day 2: AI Moves from Concept to Commercialization, SanDisk Sees Structurally Weak NAND Supply

Day two of a major Goldman Sachs technology conference featured executives from SanDisk, Etsy, Booking.com, and Block detailing AI commercialization progress and a structurally constrained NAND supply outlook. SanDisk's view that NAND supply growth will remain limited while AI inference demand expands points to sustained memory pricing support, while multiple companies reported resilient consumer spending through July and August.

AI Commercialization and Storage Supply Emerge as Twin Themes at Major Tech Conference

Day two of a major technology and media conference hosted by Goldman Sachs brought a dense slate of corporate management commentary spanning storage, e-commerce, travel, semiconductors, and fintech. According to meeting notes compiled by Goldman TMT strategist Peter Callahan, executives from dozens of companies — including SanDisk, Etsy, NXP Semiconductors, and Block — addressed AI commercialization progress, consumer trends, memory supply-demand dynamics, and the broader macroeconomic backdrop.

Two narratives dominated the day: concrete evidence that artificial intelligence is transitioning from hype to revenue-generating deployment, and a structural view on NAND flash supply that could underpin memory pricing for years.

SanDisk: NAND Supply to Remain Constrained, AI Inference the Core Demand Driver

SanDisk management stated unequivocally that NAND supply growth is likely to remain limited for the foreseeable future, while the large-scale proliferation of AI inference workloads continues to push demand higher. The company offered no specific short-term guidance update, but its medium-to-long-term supply-demand framework points directly to a potential sustained pricing support logic for NAND: constrained supply growth combined with expanding AI-driven demand may prolong a supply gap.

This is significant for the memory complex. NAND pricing has historically been highly cyclical, with boom-bust dynamics punishing manufacturers during oversupply. A structurally tighter supply picture — if accurate — would favor producers of NAND flash and related storage components, while potentially raising input costs for device makers and cloud operators.

AI Commercialization: From Matching to Customer Service

AI commercialization was the connective tissue across multiple company presentations.

Etsy management framed AI as a core tool for improving platform efficiency, describing capabilities that deliver “deeper inventory understanding, buyer understanding, and purchase intent recognition,” enabling more personalized and relevant product listings that lift conversion rates and expand buyer consideration sets. On agentic commerce, Etsy has partnered with third-party large language models and emerging AI platforms to ensure its differentiated inventory is discoverable at any entry point where a consumer begins a shopping journey. Management noted that traffic from agentic platforms remains small but carries “extremely high purchase intent,” and argued that agentic experiences should complement, not replace, existing shopping journeys.

Booking.com disclosed progress on both traffic and cost fronts. The company is working closely with hyperscalers and generative AI firms to test and learn how products and consumer interactions evolve. Management expects these channels to gradually become paid performance marketing channels and views a more diversified supplier landscape as a positive signal — though large-model-driven traffic still represents less than 1% of total traffic. On the cost side, Booking.com has deployed generative AI in customer service and software development, where it is “seeing tangible benefits.” Its own platform AI products also continue to iterate.

AI Reshapes Organizations: Half the Team, Same Output

The internal efficiency impact of AI was on direct display. CHYM disclosed it has executed a 10% workforce reduction aimed at building a “flatter, faster organization.” Its product and engineering teams have been cut to half their former size, yet output remains unchanged “because responsibilities are clearer and operations are leaner.”

Block said that after completing a major organizational restructuring earlier this year — reducing layers between decision-makers and executors — it is now achieving significant leverage on a fixed cost base. On AI infrastructure, Block has built a unified AI stack over the past two years that has “significantly improved product iteration speed and system stability.”

Consumer Resilience: Consistent Signals Across Companies

On the consumer front, multiple companies offered consistent, steady signals. Block management said consumer spending showed “extreme resilience throughout the second quarter, and that trend remained strong in July and August.” Toast management described spending levels as stable, with “no new changes worth highlighting since earnings.” This aligns with Visa’s earlier commentary at the same conference on stable consumer trends. Travel demand also held up, with Booking.com noting resilient travel demand despite persistent macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty, broadly consistent with its second-quarter earnings commentary.

One exception: Comcast noted that weakness in the Orlando theme park market, which emerged in June, has extended into the third quarter, potentially reflecting macro factors combined with pull-forward consumption from Epic Universe’s opening last year.

Market Implications

Equities: The conference reinforced a bifurcated narrative. Companies demonstrating tangible AI monetization — particularly in e-commerce personalization, customer service automation, and software development — are likely to see earnings revisions upward. SanDisk’s supply thesis is bullish for memory producers but could pressure margins for hardware OEMs and cloud providers facing higher storage costs.

Fixed Income: Resilient consumer spending signals reduce near-term recession probability, supporting credit spreads but potentially keeping central banks cautious about aggressive rate cuts. Steady consumption argues against imminent easing.

Commodities: Constrained NAND supply is a positive for semiconductor materials demand, though the read-through to broader commodity markets is limited.

Currencies: Strong US consumer data supports the dollar by sustaining the case for higher-for-longer rates relative to economies with weaker demand.

Key Takeaways for Investors

  • AI is monetizing now, not later. Etsy, Booking.com, and Block provided concrete examples of AI driving conversion, reducing costs, and improving output — investors should favor companies with disclosed AI revenue or efficiency metrics.
  • Memory supply dynamics favor NAND producers. A structurally constrained supply backdrop combined with AI inference demand growth supports pricing power for storage manufacturers.
  • Consumer resilience is broad-based. Consistent signals from Block, Toast, Visa, and Booking.com suggest the US consumer remains a stabilizing force for equities and credit.
  • Watch the exceptions. Comcast’s theme park weakness is a reminder that not all consumer segments are equally healthy, and discretionary leisure spending may be softening at the margin.
