Tencent’s Short Drama Mini-Program Surges Past 143 Million Monthly Users
TREE NEWS reports: Tencent’s Green Bubble short drama mini-program reached 143 million monthly active users (MAU) as of August. In the first week of October, weekly active users (WAU) hit 89.68 million, a 44.1% increase from the first week of September. The product, which was officially renamed in July, has seen weekly active users approach 90 million within about three months.
DataEye monitoring shows that from October 1 to 7, Green Bubble Short Drama cumulatively deployed 43,000 ad creatives, with daily average deployments up 57% compared to the week before the holiday. The growth is primarily driven by fully replacing the original “Short Drama” mini-program entry and leveraging traffic support from the WeChat ecosystem, including WeChat Channels (Video Accounts). Currently, Hongguo Short Drama leads the track with a free standalone app model.
Industry Analysis: WeChat’s Ecosystem Advantage
The rapid ascent of Green Bubble Short Drama underscores Tencent’s strategic pivot to integrate short-form video content deeply into its WeChat super-app. By consolidating the short drama entry point and leveraging cross-promotion through WeChat Channels, Tencent is effectively creating a closed-loop content ecosystem that captures user attention and drives engagement. This move is particularly significant as competition in the short drama market intensifies, with rivals like Hongguo adopting a free-to-watch model to attract users.
The 44.1% week-over-week growth in WAU indicates strong user retention and viral adoption, likely fueled by holiday season traffic and aggressive marketing. The 57% increase in ad creatives suggests Tencent is willing to invest heavily to capture market share. However, the sustainability of this growth will depend on content quality and monetization strategies, especially as the free model gains traction.
Implications for the Broader Tech and Crypto Landscape
While this news is rooted in the traditional internet sector, it has indirect implications for the crypto and Web3 space. Tencent’s success in mini-programs demonstrates the power of integrated ecosystems and could inspire similar approaches in decentralized applications (dApps). As blockchain-based platforms seek to onboard mainstream users, they may look to emulate the seamless user experience and network effects of WeChat mini-programs. Additionally, the short drama boom could accelerate the adoption of NFTs and tokenized content rights, as creators explore new monetization avenues.
Furthermore, Tencent’s aggressive push into short dramas highlights the growing convergence of social media, entertainment, and commerce. This trend is likely to influence how crypto projects design their user acquisition strategies, potentially leading to more integrated and user-friendly Web3 applications.
Forward-Looking Perspective
Looking ahead, Green Bubble Short Drama is poised to continue its growth trajectory, but challenges remain. The competitive landscape is heating up, with Hongguo and other players vying for dominance. Tencent’s ability to leverage its vast user base and data analytics will be crucial. Additionally, regulatory scrutiny over content and data privacy could impact expansion. For the crypto industry, the success of such centralized platforms serves as both a benchmark and a cautionary tale, emphasizing the importance of user experience and ecosystem synergy in driving mass adoption.
