US Stocks Slide as Chipmakers and Crypto Miners Sell Off; Apple Buckles the Trend

US equities closed lower, with the Dow down 0.74% and the Nasdaq off 1.07%, as Intel, SKHY, Micron and Riot Platforms led declines. Apple's 3.47% gain stood out, signaling rotation into megacap quality while chip and crypto-linked names remain under pressure.

Wall Street Closes Lower as Semis and Crypto-Linked Names Retreat

All three major US equity indices finished Wednesday’s session in the red, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 0.74%, the Nasdaq Composite dropping 1.07% and the S&P 500 losing 0.66%. The pullback was led by semiconductor and crypto-adjacent equities, a combination that has become a reliable barometer for risk appetite across both traditional and digital asset markets.

Semiconductor Complex Under Pressure

Intel (INTC) was among the worst performers, sliding 5.41%, while memory specialist SKHY fell 5.00% and Micron (MU) dropped 4.86%. SanDisk (SNDK) also shed 4.16%. The synchronized move lower across chip names suggests investors are trimming exposure to the AI and data-center supply chain after a strong run, rather than reacting to a single company-specific catalyst. Memory and logic makers have been among the biggest beneficiaries of the generative-AI buildout, which makes them particularly sensitive to any reassessment of capex expectations.

Crypto Miners Track Bitcoin-Linked Risk

Riot Platforms (RIOT) declined 4.25%, extending a pattern in which bitcoin miners trade as high-beta proxies for the broader crypto market. When miners sell off alongside semiconductors, it often signals that investors are reducing exposure to speculative, duration-sensitive assets rather than rotating into defensives. That correlation matters for digital asset traders, because miner equities frequently lead spot crypto moves during risk-off episodes.

Apple Defies the Downdraft

Apple (AAPL) was the standout gainer, rising 3.47% and providing a rare counterweight to the tech-heavy selloff. The divergence highlights a market that is still willing to reward megacap cash-flow stability even as it punishes cyclical and commodity-like exposure. Apple’s strength also softens the blow to the Nasdaq, masking what was otherwise a broad-based decline in growth-oriented names.

What to Watch

  • Semiconductor guidance: Any downward revision to data-center or memory demand outlooks could extend the chip selloff.
  • Bitcoin correlation: Continued weakness in RIOT and peers may foreshadow pressure on spot crypto prices.
  • Rotation signals: Apple’s outperformance suggests capital is consolidating into quality rather than exiting equities entirely.

For crypto and RWA market participants, the session reinforces a familiar dynamic: when chipmakers and miners fall together, liquidity conditions are tightening at the margin. Until semiconductor sentiment stabilizes, crypto-linked equities are likely to remain a source of volatility rather than a leading indicator of recovery.
