Japan raises eruption alert level for Hokkaido’s Tokachidake volcano

Japan’s Meteorological Agency raised the eruption alert level for Mount Tokachidake in Hokkaido from 2 to 3 at 9:30 a.m. local time on September 12, issuing a warning for the area around the crater. The agency urged caution over large ballistic rocks within about 3 kilometers of the crater. Volcanic earthquakes with large amplitudes have increased since August 17, with the largest of the series observed around 8:20 a.m. today.
