AI’s Steamroller and the ‘Workshop-ization’ of Software: Prelude to an Agent Internet

SpaceX and Meta launched AI agents while OpenAI and Anthropic slashed model prices, accelerating a split in the software economy between hyperscale AI platforms and small agent-native workshops. Blockchain payments are becoming a core rail for agent-to-agent commerce, reshaping Web3's role in the emerging agent internet.

AI’s Steamroller and the ‘Workshop-ization’ of Software: Prelude to an Agent Internet

Within weeks, SpaceX and Meta each rolled out AI agents, while OpenAI and Anthropic cut model prices again. The message is unmistakable: capable agents are becoming cheap, fast, and ubiquitous. But the deeper story is structural. As model inference commoditizes, the software economy is splitting in two — a handful of hyperscale AI platforms flattening everything in their path, and a long tail of small, agent-native “workshops” that assemble narrow tools on demand.

The Steamroller Effect

Frontier labs are vertically integrating compute, models, distribution, and increasingly payments. Each price cut is not just a marketing move; it compresses the margin available to anyone reselling generic intelligence. Startups that built thin wrappers around GPT-class APIs are being steamrolled. The survivors are those that own proprietary data, workflow lock-in, or a distribution channel agents cannot easily bypass.

The Workshop-ization of Software

At the same time, the cost of building software is collapsing. A single developer plus a fleet of agents can now ship what once required a team. This is the “workshop” model: small, composable, disposable software tailored to a specific task. SaaS as a category gets squeezed — why subscribe to a monolithic CRM when an agent can spin up a bespoke workflow in minutes? The unit of value shifts from the application to the orchestration layer and the data it touches.

Why Blockchain Payments Matter

Agents need to transact with each other, often across organizational boundaries, at machine speed. Traditional rails — cards, ACH, even many fintech APIs — impose KYC friction, chargebacks, and settlement delays that break autonomous loops. Stablecoins on public chains offer programmable, near-instant, low-cost settlement with cryptographic receipts. This is why blockchain payment rails are emerging as a foundational element of the agent internet, not a peripheral crypto use case.

Implications for Web3

  • Agent-to-agent commerce becomes the dominant on-chain transaction type, dwarfing human-initiated retail flows.
  • Identity and reputation move on-chain, since agents must verify counterparties without human intermediaries.
  • Token incentives coordinate compute, data, and inference markets that would otherwise be too fragmented to price.
  • Wallets become agent runtimes, holding policy, spend limits, and permissions.

Forward Look

The next 18 months will test whether crypto can absorb agentic demand without buckling under throughput and UX constraints. Expect consolidation among AI platforms, an explosion of micro-tools, and a quiet but decisive race to become the default settlement layer for machine-to-machine payments. The steamroller and the workshops are not opposites — they are the two halves of the same emerging stack.
