Sui Foundation Backs DATA Network With $30M as AI Data Protocol Migrates On-Chain

The Sui Foundation is investing $30 million in AI data protocol DATA Network, which will migrate to Sui as a native protocol and integrate Walrus storage. The move signals Sui's push into AI infrastructure and could establish a template for on-chain data provenance and compensation.

Sui Foundation Invests $30M in DATA Network, AI Data Protocol to Migrate to Sui

The Sui Foundation is investing $30 million in DATA Network, an AI data training protocol, becoming one of its largest institutional holders. Under the strategic partnership, DATA Network will upgrade to a native protocol on Sui and integrate with Walrus, Sui’s on-chain data storage platform, while its standalone blockchain will be retired. Existing DATA tokens will migrate to Sui at a 1:1 ratio, with the current network remaining operational during the transition. Walrus will serve as the default storage layer for applications under the DATA Foundation.

A Growing On-Chain Data Supply Chain

DATA Network’s Trace registry, which tracks training data provenance and compensates contributors, has recorded over 250 million data contributions since launching in June and processes more than 3 million credentials daily. The migration aims to scale the AI training data supply chain and provide frontier AI labs with compliant, licensed, high-quality real-world data.

The deal underscores a broader convergence between blockchain infrastructure and AI development. As AI models grow more data-hungry, the demand for verifiable, provenance-tracked datasets has intensified. Regulatory scrutiny over training data copyright and consent is rising globally, making on-chain registries that can prove data lineage increasingly valuable. DATA Network’s Trace registry positions itself at this intersection, offering a mechanism to both attribute and reward data contributors — a model that could appeal to AI labs seeking to de-risk their training pipelines.

Sui’s Expanding AI and Storage Ambitions

For Sui, the investment signals an intent to position itself beyond general-purpose smart contracts and into AI infrastructure. By absorbing DATA Network as a native protocol and pairing it with Walrus, Sui is building an integrated stack where data storage, provenance, and compensation are settled on-chain. This mirrors moves by other Layer 1 ecosystems — such as Filecoin, Arweave, and emerging AI-focused chains — that are competing to become the default settlement and storage layer for AI-related workloads.

The 1:1 token migration and continued operation of the existing network during transition suggest a carefully managed consolidation rather than a disruptive fork, reducing risk for existing DATA holders and contributors.

What to Watch

  • Whether frontier AI labs adopt Trace-verified datasets at scale, which would validate the on-chain provenance model.
  • How Walrus handles the storage load from millions of daily data credentials, and whether performance meets AI-grade requirements.
  • Competitive pressure from other chains and decentralized storage networks targeting the same AI data market.
  • Regulatory developments around data consent and copyright that could either accelerate or complicate adoption.

If successful, the partnership could establish a template for how blockchain networks attract AI workloads: not by competing on compute, but by owning the data layer — provenance, licensing, and payment rails — that AI development increasingly depends on.
