Oil Shock and AI Selloff: Nasdaq’s Worst Week Since June as Rotation Hits Growth Stocks

The Nasdaq fell 4.48% last week, its worst since June, as an oil price shock and a selloff in AI-related stocks drove a sharp rotation out of speculative growth. CoreWeave plunged 25% and storage stocks dropped 16%, while Treasuries had their best week since February. Investors now focus on tech earnings and Treasury auctions.

Oil Shock and AI Selloff: Nasdaq’s Worst Week Since June as Rotation Hits Growth Stocks

The Nasdaq Composite fell 4.48% last week, its steepest decline since June, as a sharp rally in oil prices and a broad de-risking in AI-related names triggered a violent rotation out of speculative growth stocks. The selloff was led by storage and cloud-computing darlings: a basket of storage concept stocks plunged 16% for the week, while speculative growth names slumped more than 12%. CoreWeave, the GPU cloud provider that has become a bellwether for AI infrastructure demand, tumbled 25%. Goldman Sachs warned that cloud mega-cap stocks may still embed roughly 15% downside.

Bond Market Rallies as Stocks Slide

The equity rout coincided with the best weekly performance in the U.S. Treasury market since February, reviving the classic stock-bond seesaw. Investors fled risk assets and piled into government debt, pushing yields lower. The move underscores a market that is increasingly sensitive to energy-driven inflation risk and to questions about who ultimately pays for the AI buildout. With oil prices spiking, the inflation outlook has become murkier, complicating the Federal Reserve’s path and adding a layer of macro uncertainty to an already jittery earnings season.

AI Trade Faces a Reckoning

The AI trade is now facing a “who pays?” moment. After two years of relentless capital expenditure across hyperscalers and their suppliers, investors are demanding evidence of monetization. The weakness in CoreWeave and storage names suggests that the market is beginning to differentiate between AI winners and those merely riding the narrative. Goldman’s note on cloud stocks implies that even the largest players are not immune to valuation compression if earnings fail to justify the hype. This is not necessarily the end of the AI cycle, but it is a clear signal that the easy money phase is over.

What to Watch This Week

Attention now shifts to a heavy slate of technology earnings and a series of U.S. Treasury auctions that will test demand for duration. Key questions include whether AI capex guidance remains intact, how companies frame the impact of higher energy costs, and whether bond investors continue to absorb supply at current yields. For crypto markets, the risk-off tone could weigh on digital assets, though a sustained drop in yields might eventually provide support. The interplay between oil, bonds, and tech earnings will dictate the next leg of this rotation.
