Chip Stocks Lose $2 Trillion in Eight Days, Longest Losing Streak Since 2008

US chip stocks have lost about $2 trillion in eight sessions, the longest losing streak since 2008, as rising Treasury yields and hot inflation data weigh on the sector. The selloff has implications for AI-related crypto tokens and decentralized compute networks, with market watchers divided on whether it's a benign correction or a warning sign.

A Historic Selloff in Semiconductors

US chip stocks have shed approximately $2 trillion in market value over eight consecutive trading sessions, marking the longest losing streak since 2008. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell more than 11% last week before rebounding on Monday. The rout comes as the 10-year Treasury yield opened at 5.10% on Monday, and inflation readings came in hotter than expected, heightening the possibility of further Federal Reserve rate hikes. Minutes from the Fed’s September meeting showed that most officials believe one more hike in 2026 could be appropriate.

Diverging Views on the Selloff

Market participants are split on the nature of the decline. One camp argues that elevated yields are squeezing debt-financed “neocloud” compute-rental companies, and that a 0.5 to 0.75 percentage point drop in yields would alleviate pressure. The other camp views hedge fund reductions in chip stocks as a benign correction, noting that November and December are seasonally favorable for equities. Expectations for when AI spending will peak range from one to four years.

Implications for Crypto and AI Infrastructure

The semiconductor slump carries significant implications for the crypto market, particularly for AI-adjacent tokens and decentralized compute networks. Many of these projects rely on GPU supply chains and data center buildouts that are directly tied to chipmaker fortunes. A sustained downturn in chip stocks could signal a broader recalibration of AI infrastructure spending, which would ripple through to tokenized compute markets and AI agent platforms that depend on affordable hardware access.

Moreover, the surge in Treasury yields to 5.10% poses a challenge for risk assets across the board. Crypto markets have historically shown sensitivity to real yields, and a further rise could dampen appetite for high-beta tokens, including those in the RWA and DeFi sectors. However, if yields stabilize or decline, the relief could spark a recovery in both chip stocks and crypto infrastructure plays.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Investors should watch two key signals: the trajectory of the 10-year yield and the upcoming Fed communication. A break below 5% could revive risk appetite, while a sustained move higher may extend the pain for semiconductors and crypto alike. Additionally, the seasonal tailwind in November and December could provide a temporary reprieve, but the underlying concern about AI spending peaks remains unresolved. For crypto natives, the correlation between chip stocks and decentralized compute tokens is worth monitoring closely, as any recovery in semiconductors could lift the entire AI-crypto narrative.
