Stablecoins Become the Always-On Dollar
TREE NEWS reports: Stablecoin native transfer volume averaged over $400 million per hour in the third quarter of 2025, according to a new report by Coinbase and The Block Pro Research titled The Always-On Dollar. The report also found that approximately 73% of monitored stablecoin transfers occurred outside U.S. banking hours during the 12 months ending July 31, underscoring the round-the-clock utility of dollar-denominated tokens.
Explosive Growth in Adjusted Volume
Adjusted quarterly stablecoin transfer volume has quadrupled since early 2023, reaching $891 billion in Q3. At the current growth rate, the report projects that volume could reach $1.5 trillion by the end of 2027. This trajectory highlights stablecoins’ expanding role in global payments, remittances, and trading settlements.
Cost Savings and Network Effects
The report also highlighted the cost efficiency of stablecoin remittances. Sending a $200 USDC remittance via the Base network saves approximately 86% in fees compared to traditional channels. Such savings are particularly impactful for cross-border payments, where legacy systems often impose high fees and slow settlement times.
Implications for Traditional Finance
The data suggests that stablecoins are increasingly filling gaps left by traditional banking infrastructure, especially outside standard business hours. As regulatory frameworks for stablecoins evolve—particularly in the U.S. and EU—the integration of stablecoins into mainstream finance could accelerate. Banks and payment providers may need to adapt by offering 24/7 settlement solutions or partnering with blockchain networks.
Forward-Looking Perspective
With stablecoin volumes on pace to hit $1.5 trillion by 2027, the “always-on dollar” is becoming a foundational layer for global commerce. The next phase will likely see greater institutional adoption, driven by regulatory clarity and the need for real-time, low-cost cross-border transactions. However, challenges remain, including regulatory compliance, reserve transparency, and interoperability across networks. As stablecoins continue to evolve, their impact on monetary policy and financial stability will be closely watched.
