Bybit Lists Stock Perpetuals for P&G, Lockheed Martin, and MaxLinear

Bybit has launched stock perpetual contracts for Procter & Gamble, Lockheed Martin, and MaxLinear, offering up to 20x leverage and fee discounts. This move highlights the growing convergence of traditional finance and DeFi through tokenized equities, but regulatory hurdles remain.

Bybit Expands Tokenized Equity Offerings with Three New Stock Perpetuals

Bybit has added three new stock perpetual contracts to its derivatives platform: Procter & Gamble (PGUSDT), Lockheed Martin (LMTUSDT), and MaxLinear (MXLUSDT). The contracts, which allow traders to speculate on the price movements of these traditional equities using USDT as collateral, support up to 20x leverage. To incentivize participation, Bybit is offering a limited-time fee promotion: 0% maker fees and a 50% discount on taker fees for the new listings.

Industry Analysis: The Convergence of Traditional Finance and DeFi

This move is the latest example of the growing convergence between traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi). By offering perpetual contracts on US stocks, Bybit is effectively tokenizing real-world assets (RWAs) in a derivative form, allowing crypto-native traders to gain exposure to traditional equities without leaving the blockchain ecosystem. This trend is part of a broader push to bring RWAs on-chain, which includes tokenized treasuries, real estate, and commodities. Stock perpetuals offer several advantages over traditional equity trading: 24/7 market access, higher leverage, and the ability to use crypto as collateral. However, they also raise regulatory questions, as they may be considered synthetic securities or derivatives subject to securities laws.

The addition of Procter & Gamble, a consumer staples giant, and Lockheed Martin, a defense contractor, provides diversification beyond the tech-heavy stocks typically offered. MaxLinear, a semiconductor company, adds exposure to the chip sector. This variety suggests Bybit is targeting traders with diverse interests and hedging needs. The fee promotion is likely aimed at attracting liquidity and competing with other platforms like Binance and FTX (before its collapse) that have offered similar products.

Forward-Looking Perspective: Opportunities and Challenges

The launch of stock perpetuals on Bybit could accelerate the adoption of tokenized equities, but it also faces hurdles. Regulatory clarity is crucial; if regulators classify these products as securities, Bybit may need to comply with stringent requirements or face enforcement actions. Additionally, the underlying liquidity of these perpetuals will depend on the exchange’s ability to source price feeds and manage risk. As the line between TradFi and DeFi blurs, we can expect more exchanges to offer similar products, potentially leading to a more integrated financial ecosystem. However, the success of such offerings will hinge on regulatory acceptance and the ability to provide a seamless user experience. Bybit’s move is a bold step that could pave the way for mainstream adoption of tokenized assets.
