Asian Tech Stocks Rally on Anthropic IPO Filing, But Fed and Earnings Loom

Asian tech stocks rallied sharply after Anthropic filed for an IPO, with SK Hynix and Samsung leading gains. However, fading momentum in U.S. futures and looming Fed and earnings risks suggest the recovery may be fragile.

AI Optimism Fuels Asian Rally

Asian equities advanced on Tuesday, led by a sharp rebound in technology shares after Anthropic PBC filed for an initial public offering, rekindling investor confidence in the artificial intelligence sector. The broader Asian market rose 0.8%, with South Korea’s Kospi surging 4.5% and Japan’s Nikkei 225 gaining 1.9%. AI chip suppliers were at the forefront: SK Hynix jumped more than 6%, Samsung Electronics rose nearly 5%, Tokyo Electron added 4.5%, and Screen Holdings climbed 5.2%.

The move extends a recovery that began on Wall Street Monday, when major indices snapped a two-day losing streak. Anthropic’s S-1 filing—the first for a major frontier AI model developer—is being closely scrutinized by investors for signals on AI demand and capital spending after a sharp valuation-driven selloff in the sector.

Market Implications: A Fragile Rebound

Despite the upbeat tone in Asia, momentum already appears to be fading. Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.1%, and European markets opened weaker. The rally’s durability hinges on two key events this week: the Federal Reserve’s rate decision on Wednesday and earnings from tech giants Alphabet and Microsoft on Wednesday, followed by Amazon and Intel on Thursday.

“The key question is whether this week’s results can rebuild confidence in the sustainability of AI demand,” said Jung In Yun, CEO of Fibonacci Asset Management Global. “For this recovery to last, we need to see encouraging earnings guidance and signs of continued foreign buying.”

Bond markets tell a different story. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell 2 basis points to 4.97%, extending a decline of more than 30 basis points since October—poised to end a seven-month rising streak—as investors sought safe havens amid AI stock volatility, French debt concerns, and Middle East tensions. Meanwhile, Brent crude fell about 1% to around $114.70 per barrel as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in Tehran intensified. Spot gold edged down 0.1% to $4,012.05 per ounce.

Financing Boom Raises Sustainability Questions

The AI investment wave is being fueled by massive capital raises. Meta Platforms is seeking up to $95 billion, Broadcom has arranged a $63 billion chip procurement financing, and SpaceX signed a roughly $40 billion equipment lease agreement. While this underscores institutional appetite—BlackRock’s Rick Rieder called it “one of the most exciting investment periods” of his career—some analysts warn that the pace of debt and equity issuance, combined with heavy cash burn at frontier AI labs, may be unsustainable.

Key Takeaways for Investors

  • AI trade is back, but fragile: The rally is driven by sentiment and positioning, not yet by fundamental confirmation. This week’s earnings and guidance from major AI spenders will be critical.
  • Fed decision is a wildcard: Markets price only a 10% chance of a hike on Wednesday, but odds of a hike later this year exceed 70%. A hawkish surprise could derail the recovery.
  • Watch the bond-equity divergence: Falling Treasury yields signal lingering risk aversion even as stocks rally. A sustained drop below 4.9% on the 10-year could indicate deeper concerns.
  • Oil and geopolitics: A de-escalation in the Middle East could further pressure crude, easing inflation fears but also signaling reduced geopolitical risk premium.

Investors should remain selective, focusing on companies with visible earnings growth and strong balance sheets, while keeping an eye on the Fed’s tone and the capital expenditure plans of hyperscalers.
