SK Hynix Q3 Profit Margin Nears 80% as HBM4 Ramps: What It Means for AI and RWA Markets

SK Hynix reported record Q3 revenue of 104.62 trillion won and an operating margin near 80%, driven by AI memory demand. HBM4 is set to become the main product in Q4, signaling a shift in the memory industry that could impact tokenized equity markets.

SK Hynix Posts Record Quarter as AI Memory Demand Surges

SK Hynix reported its strongest quarterly results ever for FY2026 Q3, with revenue reaching 104.62 trillion Korean won, up 328% year-over-year and 32% quarter-over-quarter. This marks the first time the company has surpassed 100 trillion won in quarterly revenue, beating market expectations of approximately 98.23 trillion won. Operating profit soared to 83.33 trillion won, a 632% year-over-year increase and 38% quarter-over-quarter growth, also exceeding forecasts of 76.96 trillion won.

The operating margin climbed to nearly 80%, up from 76% in the previous quarter and 47% a year earlier. This means that for every 100 won of revenue, close to 80 won converted into operating profit—an extraordinary level for a memory chip manufacturer.

HBM4 Takes Center Stage

The most significant product shift this quarter is the full-scale ramp of HBM4. The company stated that HBM4 shipments began in earnest during Q3 and are expected to surpass HBM3E in both volume and revenue in Q4, making it the primary HBM product. This transition underscores SK Hynix’s growing focus on next-generation high-bandwidth memory, which requires advanced DRAM processes, stacking, packaging, and customer certification—commanding higher value and directly benefiting from next-generation AI accelerator platforms.

Growth is not limited to HBM. Server DDR5 sales increased significantly, driving DRAM growth, while 321-layer TLC enterprise SSDs expanded shipments, making high-capacity data center storage a new profit source. SK Hynix is diversifying from a single HBM product to a portfolio that includes HBM, server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs.

Financial Strength and Shareholder Returns

The company ended the quarter with 114.5 trillion won in cash and equivalents, up 26.5 trillion won quarter-over-quarter. Borrowings fell to 15.8 trillion won, down 2.8 trillion won, and net cash rose to 98.7 trillion won. SK Hynix plans to implement approximately 100 trillion won in shareholder returns in 2026, including at least 30 trillion won in cash dividends and at least 60 trillion won in share buybacks and cancellations. A third-quarter dividend of 20,000 won per share includes a special dividend of 10,000 won.

Industry Implications and RWA Market Impact

This earnings report demonstrates that AI infrastructure investment has expanded from GPU demand to the entire memory system. AI servers require not just compute chips but also high-bandwidth memory, server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs to handle model parameters, training data, and inference caches. As model sizes grow and inference requests multiply, system requirements for memory bandwidth, capacity, and data read speeds increase.

For the RWA and tokenized asset markets, SK Hynix’s performance signals robust demand for AI-related equities that underpin tokenized stock offerings. Platforms like MSX that offer tokenized US stocks and pre-IPO assets could see increased interest as investors seek exposure to AI infrastructure themes. The company’s long-term supply agreements with 14 major customers, covering over 50% of total capacity for 2027-2028, provide revenue visibility that may appeal to tokenized equity investors.

However, the 80% operating margin is unlikely to be the long-term norm. It relies on three simultaneous conditions: rapid AI memory demand growth, tight advanced capacity supply, and rising product prices. If competitors ramp HBM4 capacity, traditional memory supply increases, or cloud providers slow capital expenditures, prices and margins could decline.

Forward-Looking Perspective

SK Hynix’s transformation from a cyclical, balance-sheet-repairing company to a high-profit entity capable of simultaneously investing in expansion and returning cash is notable. The company’s decision to halt the Solidigm IPO reflects improved cash levels and changing capital market conditions. Looking ahead, three indicators warrant close attention: whether HBM4 surpasses HBM3E in Q4 as planned, yield and profitability after M15X expansion, and whether 2027 capital expenditure growth continues to generate commensurate revenue and free cash flow. For crypto and RWA investors, SK Hynix’s results reinforce the narrative that AI infrastructure spending remains robust, supporting demand for tokenized exposure to semiconductor and AI-related equities.
