RWA Market Rebounds to $39.56B as DTCC Launches Tokenization Service, SEC Flags Risks
The real-world asset (RWA) tokenization sector is showing renewed momentum. On-chain market capitalization for RWA tokens has climbed back to $39.56 billion, while stablecoin monthly transfer volumes surged 38.53%, signaling growing adoption of tokenized cash instruments. The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) officially launched its tokenization service, initially supporting 34 securities, marking a significant step in bridging traditional finance and blockchain infrastructure.
DTCC’s Move and Industry Pushback
DTCC’s service aims to provide a compliant framework for tokenizing traditional securities, potentially streamlining settlement and collateral management. However, not all tokenization efforts are welcomed. OKX and ICE’s planned tokenized stock offering reportedly faced opposition from more than half of the companies whose shares would be tokenized, highlighting concerns over control, regulatory ambiguity, and potential market fragmentation.
Regulatory Crosscurrents
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has for the first time included tokenization in its high-risk review of clearing agencies, signaling heightened scrutiny of how tokenized assets interact with market infrastructure. Meanwhile, Canada released a draft regulatory framework for stablecoins, aiming to bring clarity to issuers and holders. These developments underscore a global regulatory patchwork that could shape the pace of institutional adoption.
Analysis and Implications
The rebound in RWA market cap and the surge in stablecoin transfers suggest that tokenization is moving beyond experimentation. DTCC’s entry lends credibility, but the SEC’s risk designation and corporate resistance to tokenized equities indicate that governance and legal certainty remain critical hurdles. The Canadian stablecoin draft adds to a growing body of regulation that may either harmonize or fragment the market.
For investors and builders, the key takeaway is that infrastructure is maturing, but regulatory clarity is still catching up. Projects that prioritize compliance and interoperability are likely to gain traction, while those that bypass traditional gatekeepers may face pushback.
Forward Look
Over the next 12–18 months, expect more traditional financial institutions to pilot tokenization, but also more regulatory scrutiny. The success of DTCC’s service and the resolution of corporate objections to tokenized stocks will be bellwethers for how quickly RWA can scale. Stablecoin regulation in Canada and elsewhere could set precedents for global standards, making cross-border compliance a competitive advantage.
