Hong Kong SFC Signals Tokenized Gold ETF as Next Pilot, With 17 Tokenized Products Live

Hong Kong's SFC is preparing to pilot tokenized gold ETFs as the next phase of its RWA program, following the approval of tokenized money market funds for 24/7 trading. With 17 tokenized products already live, the move could deepen institutional adoption and open new collateral avenues for regulated DeFi.

Hong Kong Pushes Tokenization Frontier Toward Gold

Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) is preparing to extend its tokenization pilot program beyond money market funds, with tokenized gold ETFs emerging as the likely next candidate. Julia Ng, Executive Director of the SFC’s Investment Products Division, outlined the plan on November 2 during Hong Kong FinTech Week, noting that the regulator has already greenlit 17 tokenized products to date.

The announcement follows the SFC’s earlier approval of tokenized money market funds for round-the-clock secondary-market trading on licensed virtual asset trading platforms (VATPs) — a move that gave institutional investors a regulated route to hold tokenized cash instruments with near-continuous liquidity.

Why Gold, and Why Now

Gold is a natural next step for tokenized real-world assets. It is a universally recognized store of value, deeply liquid in physical form, and already supported by an established ETF infrastructure in Hong Kong. Tokenizing gold ETFs could offer several advantages:

  • Fractional ownership — lowering the minimum investment threshold for retail and smaller institutional allocators.
  • 24/7 settlement — aligning gold exposure with crypto-native trading hours on licensed platforms.
  • Composability — enabling tokenized gold to serve as collateral in DeFi and structured products within a regulated perimeter.
  • Operational efficiency — reducing settlement friction and reconciliation costs versus traditional ETF share transfers.

The SFC’s approach reflects a deliberate, incremental strategy: validate tokenization through low-risk, highly liquid instruments (money market funds) before expanding to commodities, and eventually to equities and bonds. With 17 tokenized products already in the market, Hong Kong has quietly built one of Asia’s most developed regulated RWA ecosystems.

Implications for the RWA Sector

Tokenized gold could accelerate institutional adoption in a way that money market funds alone cannot. Gold carries cultural and retail resonance across Asia, and a regulated tokenized gold ETF would bridge traditional precious-metals investors with digital-asset rails. It also strengthens Hong Kong’s positioning against Singapore and the UAE, both of which are courting RWA issuance.

For DeFi protocols, the development is significant: regulated tokenized gold could become a high-quality collateral asset on licensed platforms, potentially unlocking lending and yield products that were previously constrained by the absence of compliant real-world collateral.

Looking Ahead

The path from announcement to launch will depend on market-maker participation, custody arrangements, and the willingness of licensed VATPs to list the product. If successful, tokenized gold ETFs could serve as a template for tokenized commodities more broadly — from silver to industrial metals — and reinforce Hong Kong’s ambition to become a global hub for regulated digital-asset innovation. The key question is no longer whether tokenization will scale, but which jurisdiction will capture the liquidity first.
