Gnosis Chain to Become Ethereum L2 by 2027, Abandoning Independent L1 Status

Gnosis Chain will transition from an independent L1 to an Ethereum L2 by spring 2027, becoming the first general-purpose zone in the Ethereum Economic Zone. The move aims to cut costs and leverage Ethereum's security, but will sacrifice its 200,000-validator set.

Gnosis Chain Announces Transition to Ethereum L2

Gnosis Chain will cease operating as an independent Layer 1 blockchain and transition to an Ethereum Layer 2 rollup by spring 2027. The move will see Gnosis Chain become the first general-purpose zone within the emerging Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ), settling to Ethereum while preserving all existing contracts, balances, addresses, chain ID, and the xDAI gas token. Developers will not need to redeploy their applications.

The transition will be executed via a hard fork. Gnosis estimates that, based on current DeFi total value locked (TVL), Gnosis Chain would rank among the top ten Ethereum L2s after the shift. It also claims to be the first L2 capable of synchronous composability with Ethereum mainnet, a feature that could enhance cross-chain liquidity and user experience.

Why the Shift?

Operating an independent L1 is costly. Gnosis DAO spends approximately $7-10 million annually to maintain the chain’s validator set and infrastructure. By becoming an L2, Gnosis can offload security to Ethereum and reduce overhead. However, the transition comes at a cost: the network’s roughly 200,000 independent validators will not be retained post-migration. This raises questions about decentralization and community governance, as the validator set is a key pillar of Gnosis Chain’s identity.

Industry Implications

The decision reflects a broader trend of smaller L1s struggling to compete with Ethereum’s network effects and the growing rollup-centric roadmap. As Ethereum’s ecosystem matures, projects are increasingly opting to become L2s or app-chains that settle to Ethereum, rather than maintaining independent consensus. This consolidation could lead to a more interconnected multi-chain landscape, but also risks reducing diversity and increasing reliance on Ethereum’s security model.

For DeFi users and developers, the transition promises continuity: no contract migrations, no token swaps, and the same address space. The synchronous composability with mainnet could unlock new possibilities for cross-chain DeFi strategies, such as atomic arbitrage and unified liquidity pools.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Gnosis’s move sets a precedent for other mid-sized L1s evaluating their long-term viability. If successful, it could accelerate the shift toward an Ethereum-centric ecosystem where L2s and EEZ zones provide scalability while inheriting Ethereum’s security. However, the loss of a large validator set may concern those prioritizing decentralization. The coming years will reveal whether this trade-off—security and cost efficiency over sovereign consensus—becomes the norm for smaller chains.

As the 2027 deadline approaches, the crypto community will watch closely to see if Gnosis can execute a seamless transition and whether its bet on Ethereum’s economic zone pays off.
