From Mining Rigs to AI Data Centers: Waterdrip Capital’s CEO on the Next Crypto Supercycle

Waterdrip Capital's CEO reflects on 14 years of crypto investing, from Bitcoin mining to AI data centers, and predicts the next big opportunities in Bitcoin Layer 2, RWA tokenization, and pre-IPO equity on-chain.

From Mining Rigs to AI Data Centers: Waterdrip Capital’s CEO on the Next Crypto Supercycle

In a candid retrospective, the founder and CEO of Waterdrip Capital—a crypto fund with roots stretching back to 2013—shared hard-won lessons from over a decade of investing across Bitcoin mining, Layer 2 scaling, and now AI infrastructure. The conversation, published via a personal column, offers a rare glimpse into the mindset of an early adopter who has pivoted through multiple market cycles while maintaining a dual thesis: AI as the new oil, crypto as the new gold.

From ASICs to Bitcoin Layer 2: A Decade of Iteration

The CEO recounted his evolution from a small-scale miner in 2013—when Bitcoin was trading in the hundreds of dollars—to a major backer of Bitcoin Layer 2 solutions. He emphasized that the mining era taught him the importance of energy costs and hardware cycles, lessons that now inform his view on AI data centers. ‘Mining was the first real-world bridge between energy markets and digital assets,’ he noted. ‘AI is the second, but on a much larger scale.’

His pivot to Bitcoin Layer 2 came after recognizing that Bitcoin’s security model alone wouldn’t scale transaction throughput. He highlighted investments in sidechains and rollup-like protocols aiming to bring DeFi to Bitcoin without compromising its base layer. However, he also admitted to missteps—chasing hype around certain L2s that lacked genuine user demand, a common pitfall in early-stage crypto investing.

Why AI Data Centers Are the New ‘Oil’

The most striking shift in his strategy is the move into AI data center financing. He draws a parallel: just as oil powered the industrial age, computational power (GPUs) will fuel the AI age. Waterdrip has begun allocating capital to projects that build and operate high-performance computing facilities, often using tokenized debt or revenue-sharing models to bridge traditional finance and crypto liquidity.

‘We’re seeing a convergence,’ he explained. ‘AI needs massive compute, and crypto offers a transparent, liquid way to fund and monetize that infrastructure. This is not just a narrative—it’s a fundamental shift in how capital flows to physical assets.’

RWA Tokenization and Pre-IPO Equity: The Next Frontier

Looking ahead, the CEO is most excited about Real World Asset (RWA) tokenization, particularly for pre-IPO equity. He believes that by putting private company shares on-chain, crypto can unlock trillions in illiquid value. ‘The next unicorn will be a protocol that lets anyone own a piece of SpaceX or Anthropic before they go public,’ he predicted, while cautioning that regulatory clarity remains the biggest hurdle.

His advice to new investors: diversify across compute, Bitcoin, and emerging tokenized assets, but remain humble. ‘In 14 years, I’ve seen more scams than innovations. The key is to focus on infrastructure that survives bear markets.’

Forward-Looking Perspective

As the AI and crypto narratives converge, Waterdrip Capital’s strategy offers a blueprint for institutions seeking exposure to both megatrends. The CEO’s final note was optimistic: ‘We are early. The next decade will make the last one look like a warm-up.’
