Crypto Stocks Dominate Russell 1000 Top Performers in Q3, Tom Lee Says

As of the third quarter, roughly 20% of the top-performing stocks in the Russell 1000 Index are crypto-related, chairman of Ethereum treasury company Bitmine. In a post on X, Lee highlighted that BMNR has surged 99% quarter-to-date, ranking 4th; MSTR is up 67%, ranking 12th; CRCL has gained 65%, ranking 14th; and BLSH is up 55%, ranking 21st. With just one month left in the quarter, Lee suggests these strong performers could become targets for investors seeking momentum.

What This Means for the Market

The data underscores a growing convergence between traditional equity markets and the crypto ecosystem. Crypto-linked equities—ranging from MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin treasury strategy to Coinbase’s exchange revenue and Bitmine’s Ethereum-focused holdings—are increasingly viewed as leveraged plays on digital asset prices. Their outperformance in a broad index like the Russell 1000 signals that institutional investors are not only allocating directly to crypto but also via publicly traded vehicles.

Tom Lee’s observation comes amid a period of relative stability in crypto prices, with Bitcoin and Ethereum holding key support levels. The strong equity performance may reflect optimism about upcoming catalysts, such as potential ETF expansions and clearer regulatory frameworks. Additionally, companies like MicroStrategy have continued to accumulate Bitcoin, enhancing their sensitivity to price moves, while Coinbase benefits from trading volume and diversification into derivatives and staking.

Forward-Looking Perspective

As the quarter draws to a close, investors may rotate into these high-momentum names, but caution is warranted. The correlation between crypto stocks and underlying digital assets remains high, meaning any sharp downturn in Bitcoin or Ethereum could quickly erase gains. However, if the current trend persists, we could see more traditional companies adopting crypto treasury strategies, further entrenching digital assets in mainstream finance. The next month will be critical in determining whether these stocks can sustain their leadership or if profit-taking will set in.
