Ethereum Institutional Staking Heats Up, But Lido’s Market Share Is Falling

Lido captured only 5.7% of new Ethereum staking inflows in H1 while its market share fell from 23.93% to 21.18%. With institutional money favoring native and regulated staking and its NEST buyback paused on a negative budget, the leading liquid staking protocol faces mounting revenue pressure.

Lido’s Staking Dominance Slips as Institutional Money Chooses Elsewhere

Lido, the largest liquid staking protocol on Ethereum, captured only 5.7% of new ETH staking inflows in the first half of the year, while its overall market share declined from 23.93% to 21.18%. The protocol’s NEST buyback mechanism has been paused because its budget turned negative, compounding revenue pressure.

Why Institutional Stakers Are Looking Past Lido

The staking landscape has changed dramatically since Lido first rose to dominance. Institutional players — from asset managers to exchanges and custodians — increasingly favor native staking, direct validator operations, or competing liquid staking and restaking protocols that offer customized compliance, fee structures, and yield strategies.

  • Native and direct staking: Large holders can stake ETH natively without paying a liquid staking token (LST) fee, keeping full yield and avoiding secondary-market token risk.
  • Regulatory clarity: Custodial and regulated staking services are seen as safer for institutions navigating uncertain securities treatment of LSTs.
  • Restaking competition: EigenLayer and other restaking venues have diverted capital and attention, offering additional yield that plain LSTs cannot match.
  • Fee compression: Lido’s 10% fee on staking rewards looks expensive next to zero-fee or low-fee alternatives.

What the NEST Buyback Pause Signals

The suspension of the NEST buyback due to a negative budget is a telling sign. Buybacks are typically funded by protocol revenue; when that revenue shrinks, the mechanism becomes unsustainable. For LDO holders, this removes a key source of demand and highlights the fragility of a business model that depends on continued net inflows.

Lido is not collapsing — it still commands over a fifth of staked ETH. But the trend line matters. In a market where staking is becoming commoditized, the protocol must differentiate through restaking integrations, institutional-grade products, or governance innovation.

Forward Outlook

Ethereum staking is maturing from a growth-at-all-costs phase into a competitive, margin-sensitive market. Lido’s challenge is no longer attracting stake but retaining it. If institutional flows continue to bypass LSTs in favor of native or regulated staking, Lido’s share could drift lower, pressuring LDO’s valuation and forcing a strategic reset. Watch for new institutional partnerships, fee adjustments, or restaking pivots in the coming quarters.
