Week 39 Test: Can Markets Absorb the FOMC, Durable Goods, and China’s Price Signals?

Week 39 is a confirmation window after the FOMC, with durable goods orders, flash PMIs, and Chinese price signals deciding whether markets enter an orderly digestion phase or face a hawkish real-yield shock. Crypto and risk assets are directly exposed to the outcome.

Week 39 Is a Confirmation Week, Not a Fresh Catalyst

After Week 37 rekindled inflation pressure and Week 38 concentrated a burst of global policy risk, Week 39 arrives as a pure confirmation window. The question for investors is no longer what central banks will do, but whether the data can validate the market’s assumption that policy normalization is proceeding without a fresh inflation shock or a growth breakdown.

The Bull Case: Orderly Digestion

If post-FOMC Treasury yields hold steady, flash PMIs avoid a collapse, and durable goods orders keep core capital goods from rolling over, the market can settle into a constructive digestion phase. A benign Chinese input-price and industrial-profit signal would reinforce that narrative by removing the threat of a renewed commodity shock. In that scenario, real yields stay anchored, the dollar avoids a sharp breakout, and risk assets — including crypto — can grind higher on stable financial conditions.

The Bear Case: Hawkish Residuals and Weak Demand

The opposite configuration is equally plausible. A hawkish aftertaste in real yields, softening US goods demand, and another “strong factory output, weak domestic absorption” print from China would tighten financial conditions through three channels: a stronger dollar, narrower market breadth, and weaker industrial commodities. That combination historically pressures cyclical equities, credit spreads, and high-beta crypto assets alike.

Why Crypto Is Not Immune

Digital assets have traded increasingly in sync with macro liquidity conditions. A hawkish real-yield shock would likely hit BTC and ETH through the same duration and dollar channels that affect long-duration tech equities. Conversely, a stable-yield, soft-landing confirmation would support the risk-on rotation that has lifted tokenized real-world assets, DeFi yields, and crypto-linked equities in recent months.

What to Watch This Week

  • Real yields: Any hawkish residual after the FOMC would be the single most important signal.
  • Flash PMIs: A services-led slowdown is more tolerable than a manufacturing collapse.
  • Durable goods / core capital goods: The key test of whether US business investment is holding up.
  • China price and industrial profit data: Watch for the “strong factory, weak absorption” pattern that has repeatedly weighed on global reflation trades.

Forward-Looking View

Week 37 already reminded investors not to bet on a smooth inflation decline during the September policy window. Week 39 will determine whether that caution is rewarded or whether markets must reprice toward tighter conditions. For crypto and macro-sensitive portfolios, the prudent stance is to stay constructive on structure but light on leverage until the confirmation data clears.
