China Stocks Turn Positive as Oil Giant Hits 18-Year High, Consumer Shares Rally

Chinese stocks recovered from early losses as PetroChina hit an 18-year high and consumer shares rallied on policy support. AI hardware stocks remained weak, while gold's slide below $4,000 pressured miners. The session highlights a rotation into defensive and policy-favored sectors.

Market Overview

Chinese equities staged a midday recovery on October 26, with the Shanghai Composite Index briefly turning positive in the afternoon session, driven by gains in real estate, cultural media, and consumer sectors. The ChiNext Index narrowed its loss to under 1% after falling more than 3% earlier in the day. Hong Kong stocks also rebounded, with the Hang Seng Index rising 0.59% and the Hang Seng Tech Index paring losses to 0.17%.

Sector Highlights

Oil and gas stocks led the rally, with PetroChina surging nearly 4% to an 18-year high, lifting the entire petroleum sector. China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec), CNOOC, and oilfield services companies all posted solid gains. The consumer sector was broadly stronger, with food and beverage, retail, and liquor stocks advancing. Several consumer names hit limit-up, including Guifaxiang, Qingdao Foods, and Liangpin Puzi. Retailer Shanghai 900 extended its winning streak to four consecutive limit-up sessions.

Real estate, shipping, and banking sectors also contributed to the rebound. The pharmaceutical commercial sector was active, with companies like Saili Medical and Intec Pharma hitting limit-up, while brain-computer interface concept stocks surged following the launch of a national high-quality dataset project in Wuhan.

On the downside, AI hardware-related sectors remained under pressure. PCB, optical modules, and copper clad laminate (CCL) stocks fell sharply, with the trio of New Easy Light, Zhongji Innolight, and TFC Optical Communication all declining. Precious metals also tumbled as spot gold broke below $3,980 per ounce, dragging gold miners like Chifeng Gold down sharply.

Market Implications

The session reflects a rotation within the Chinese equity market. Investors are shifting away from high-flying AI hardware names that have driven gains this year and into more defensive or policy-supported sectors such as consumer staples, energy, and real estate. The strength in PetroChina, a heavyweight index component, helped stabilize the broader market.

The consumer sector received a dual boost from policy and data. The Ministry of Commerce reported that service retail sales grew 5% year-on-year in the first three quarters, outpacing goods retail by 4 percentage points. This has raised expectations for further consumption-support measures. CITIC Securities noted that the liquor sector is bottoming out, with leading companies offering dividend yields above 4%, and sees opportunities in dairy and small-cap consumer names with new growth catalysts.

The decline in AI hardware stocks may be linked to profit-taking after strong rallies and concerns over demand sustainability. The drop in Lenovo shares, down 40% over the past month, followed a report showing a 21% year-on-year decline in global PC shipments for Q3 2026, partly due to higher memory and component costs.

In commodities, domestic futures were mixed. Energy products rose, with fuel oil up 3.16% and asphalt up 5.55%, while agricultural products and ferrous metals declined. The bond market saw modest losses, with most government bond futures edging lower.

Key Takeaways for Investors

  • Sector rotation is underway: Money is flowing from AI hardware into consumer, energy, and real estate sectors. Investors should watch for sustained momentum in these areas.
  • Policy support for consumption: The services retail data and government rhetoric suggest further stimulus for consumption may be coming, benefiting consumer discretionary and staples.
  • Oil majors as stabilizers: PetroChina’s 18-year high highlights the appeal of high-dividend, state-owned enterprises amid market volatility.
  • AI hardware volatility: The sharp pullback in optical modules and PCB stocks underscores the risk of overcrowded trades. However, long-term demand for AI infrastructure remains intact.
  • Gold’s retreat: The break below $4,000 could signal a short-term correction, but safe-haven demand may persist amid global uncertainties.
