$488 Million Wiped Out: Longs Bear the Brunt of Crypto’s Latest Shakeout

Roughly $488 million in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated across the market in the past 24 hours, with long positions accounting for the majority of the damage. A total of 91,112 traders were liquidated, with $299 million in longs and $189 million in shorts forcibly closed.

Ethereum Leads the Carnage

ETH was the hardest-hit major asset, with approximately $204 million in liquidations — $112 million from longs and $92 million from shorts. The largest single liquidation occurred on Binance’s ETHUSDT pair, valued at $11.77 million. Bitcoin followed with roughly $144 million in liquidations ($98.5 million longs, $45.4 million shorts).

Among altcoins, XRP saw about $19.8 million liquidated, split almost evenly between longs ($9.8 million) and shorts ($10 million). ZEC recorded roughly $16.6 million in liquidations, while SOL saw approximately $15.6 million. Other assets collectively accounted for around $41.6 million.

What’s Driving the Volatility?

The skew toward long liquidations suggests the market recently experienced a sharp downward move that caught bullish traders off guard. When price dips below key support levels, cascading liquidations can amplify the sell-off, creating a feedback loop that forces more positions to close.

Notably, the near-even split between long and short liquidations on XRP and ZEC hints at two-sided volatility, where rapid price swings in both directions trapped traders on either side. This kind of choppy, range-bound action often precedes a larger directional move.

Market Implications

Large liquidation events can serve as a cleansing mechanism, flushing out excessive leverage and resetting funding rates. However, they also signal fragile market sentiment and can trigger further volatility if spot buying doesn’t step in to absorb the selling pressure.

With ETH liquidations outpacing BTC, traders appear to be expressing stronger conviction — and taking on more risk — in the second-largest cryptocurrency. The concentration of liquidations on Binance’s ETHUSDT pair underscores the exchange’s dominance in derivatives trading.

Looking Ahead

Investors should watch whether funding rates normalize and open interest stabilizes in the coming days. If leverage remains elevated, another wave of liquidations could be triggered by any sharp price move. Conversely, a deleveraging event that clears out excess positioning can lay the groundwork for a healthier, more sustainable rally.

For now, the market remains on edge, and traders would be wise to manage risk carefully in this environment.
