Bitget Expands Proof of Reserves to 19 Assets, Raising the Bar for Exchange Transparency

Bitget has expanded its Proof of Reserves from four cryptocurrencies to 19 assets, widening the share of user holdings that can be independently verified. The move raises the transparency baseline for centralized exchanges and signals that reserve disclosure is becoming a competitive necessity.

Bitget Widens Proof of Reserves Coverage to 19 Assets

Bitget, one of the world’s largest Universal Exchanges (UEX), has significantly upgraded its Proof of Reserves (PoR) system, expanding verifiable coverage from just four cryptocurrencies to 19 major assets. The move means more than 20 assets are now subject to some form of reserve verification, dramatically increasing the share of user holdings that can be independently checked against on-chain data.

The upgrade extends both platform-level reserve disclosures and personal Proof of Assets verification, giving users a clearer view of whether their balances are backed one-to-one. In practical terms, a user holding assets beyond Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT and USDC can now confirm that their specific holdings are included in the exchange’s reserve snapshot.

Why This Matters for the Industry

Proof of Reserves has evolved from a post-FTX public relations exercise into a competitive differentiator. After the collapse of several major centralized platforms in 2022 and 2023, users began demanding cryptographic evidence that exchanges actually hold the assets they claim. Early PoR implementations, however, were narrow — typically covering only BTC and ETH — leaving large portions of user portfolios unverified.

Bitget’s expansion addresses this gap directly. By bringing 19 assets under verification, the exchange is signaling that reserve transparency should scale with the diversity of assets it lists. For competitors, this raises the baseline. Exchanges that still publish limited four-asset snapshots may face growing pressure to match broader coverage, especially as institutional clients and regulators scrutinize custody practices more closely.

The Technical and Trust Challenges

Broadening PoR is not merely a marketing decision. Each additional asset introduces complexity: Merkle tree structures must be rebuilt, wallet addresses must be independently verifiable, and third-party auditors must confirm that reserve balances match liabilities across more chains and token standards. Stablecoins, wrapped assets and tokens on multiple chains add reconciliation risk.

There is also the question of what PoR does not prove. Reserve attestations are typically point-in-time snapshots and do not guarantee that an exchange is solvent in a going-concern sense, nor do they capture off-balance-sheet liabilities. Industry analysts have repeatedly noted that PoR is a useful transparency tool, not a substitute for full financial audits.

Forward-Looking Perspective

The trend is clear: reserve transparency is becoming table stakes for large exchanges. Expect three developments in the coming year:

  • Standardization: Pressure will grow for a common framework covering asset coverage, audit frequency and real-time attestations.
  • Real-time verification: Static monthly snapshots may give way to continuous, on-chain-verifiable reserve dashboards.
  • Regulatory integration: Jurisdictions drafting custody rules may reference PoR standards, turning voluntary disclosures into compliance requirements.

Bitget’s expansion is a meaningful step, but the broader lesson is that transparency is now a moving target. The exchanges that treat Proof of Reserves as an evolving infrastructure — not a one-time announcement — will be best positioned to earn user trust in the next market cycle.
