Bitcoin Holds Price but Breaks Key On-Chain Level After Fed Hike and Senate Vote

Bitcoin weathered a Fed rate hike and a failed Senate vote without a major price breakdown, but on-chain data tells a different story. A second consecutive daily close below Glassnode's True Market Mean has turned a minor slip into a structural break, signaling that underlying holder behavior is weakening even as spot price holds.

Two Macro Shocks, One Resilient Price

Bitcoin absorbed two significant macro shocks within 48 hours — a Federal Reserve rate hike and a failed U.S. Senate vote — and its spot price held up far better than many traders expected. On the surface, the market looked resilient. Underneath, however, a critical on-chain metric quietly flipped bearish, creating a divergence that deserves attention.

The Level That Mattered

Glassnode had flagged the week’s key test in advance: the True Market Mean, an on-chain cost-basis model that estimates the average acquisition price of all active coins. A single daily close below this level can be noise. A second consecutive close below it is a structural signal. Wednesday delivered exactly that — a second daily close beneath the True Market Mean, turning what looked like a harmless slip into a technical break.

Why the True Market Mean Matters

Unlike simple moving averages, the True Market Mean weights coins by their last on-chain movement, filtering out lost or dormant supply. When price trades below it, the average holder is underwater, which historically precedes distribution pressure, weaker spot bid support, and a higher probability of deeper drawdowns. The metric is not a timing tool, but it is a reliable regime indicator.

The Divergence Explained

The disconnect between price stability and on-chain deterioration is not unusual, but it is informative:

  • Price resilience often reflects derivatives positioning, ETF flows, or short covering rather than genuine spot demand.
  • On-chain weakness reflects actual holder behavior — coins moving at a loss, exchange inflows rising, and long-term holder supply stalling.
  • When the two diverge, the on-chain side typically wins over a multi-week horizon, though not always immediately.

What Traders Should Watch Next

The next few sessions are decisive. A quick reclaim of the True Market Mean would neutralize the break and re-establish the uptrend structure. Failure to reclaim within a week would confirm the regime shift and likely invite a retest of lower support zones. Key signals to monitor include exchange netflows, the spent output profit ratio (SOPR), and whether long-term holders resume accumulation or begin distributing.

Forward Outlook

Macro headwinds from the Fed remain the dominant force. Rate hikes compress liquidity and weigh on risk assets broadly, and crypto is no exception. The failed Senate vote adds regulatory uncertainty to the mix. Bitcoin’s ability to hold price despite these pressures is genuinely notable — but on-chain data suggests the market’s foundation is thinner than the chart implies. Until the True Market Mean is reclaimed, the burden of proof sits with the bulls.
