Short Positions Dominate as $294M Wiped Out Across Crypto Markets
TREE NEWS reports: Roughly $294 million in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated over the past 24 hours, with short sellers absorbing the brunt of the damage. Total short liquidations reached $229 million versus just $65.25 million in long liquidations, a ratio of more than 3.5 to 1. In total, 97,020 traders were liquidated across major exchanges.
The largest single liquidation occurred on Binance’s ETHUSDT pair, valued at $4.365 million.
Ethereum Leads the Pain
ETH accounted for the largest share of liquidations at approximately $76.7 million, of which $65.63 million came from shorts and only $11.07 million from longs. Bitcoin followed with $62.85 million in total liquidations, though its breakdown skewed differently: $52.86 million in long liquidations versus just $9.99 million in shorts, suggesting BTC’s price action was more two-sided.
Zcash (ZEC) emerged as a surprising standout, with $23.18 million in liquidations — nearly all from shorts ($19.74 million). Solana (SOL) saw $17.04 million liquidated, heavily short-skewed at $12.73 million. XRP added $8.42 million, and NEAR contributed $5.06 million. Other assets collectively accounted for $36.76 million.
What the Data Signals
The overwhelming dominance of short liquidations points to a broad-based upward move that caught bearish traders off guard. When short liquidations vastly exceed long liquidations, it typically indicates a short squeeze — a self-reinforcing rally where forced buying from liquidated shorts pushes prices higher, triggering more liquidations.
The dispersion across assets is notable. While Bitcoin saw relatively balanced liquidations, altcoins like ETH, ZEC, and SOL were almost exclusively short-driven. This pattern suggests that traders had positioned heavily against altcoins, possibly betting on continued weakness or rotation back into BTC. The resulting squeeze may have been amplified by thinner order books in these assets.
Forward-Looking Perspective
Such liquidation events often mark short-term inflection points. A $294 million wipeout is significant but not extreme by historical standards — the market has seen single-day liquidations exceeding $1 billion during major volatility events. The key question is whether this squeeze represents the start of a sustained trend reversal or merely a temporary flush of overleveraged positions.
Traders should watch funding rates and open interest in the coming days. If funding turns deeply positive and open interest rebuilds quickly, it could signal that longs are crowding in — setting up the conditions for a reversal in the opposite direction. Conversely, if open interest remains subdued, the squeeze may have cleared out enough leverage to support a more durable move higher.
The concentration of short liquidations in altcoins also raises the possibility that capital is rotating out of Bitcoin and into higher-beta assets. Whether that rotation sustains will depend on broader macro conditions and risk appetite in the days ahead.
