ICBC Reclaims Top A-Share Market Cap as Changxin Memory Slumps on Slowing Profit Growth

ICBC reclaimed the top A-share market cap ranking as Changxin Technology plunged over 7% on sharply slowing profit growth, triggering a rotation from AI hardware into high-dividend banks. The divergence highlights growing caution over the memory chip upcycle and the appeal of defensive yield plays in a low-rate environment.

ICBC Reclaims Top A-Share Market Cap as Changxin Memory Slumps on Slowing Profit Growth

China’s A-share market opened lower on Monday, with the Shanghai Composite Index bucking the trend to edge up 0.16% on the back of dividend-paying heavyweights, while the ChiNext board fell over 1%. The session’s dominant narrative was the sharp divergence between old-economy banks and new-economy AI hardware names, triggered by a disappointing earnings update from memory chipmaker Changxin Technology.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) rose as much as 1.42% to a record high, lifting its total market capitalization to about 3.02 trillion yuan and reclaiming the title of China’s most valuable listed company. It briefly overtook Changxin Technology, whose market value had surged to 2.8627 trillion yuan before the memory maker’s stock plunged more than 7% intraday, at one point falling nearly 9% to a record low since its listing.

Changxin’s Profit Growth Decelerates Sharply

The catalyst for the selloff was Changxin’s third-quarter earnings guidance. The company expects net profit of 53.4–54.9 billion yuan for the quarter, representing sequential growth of just 1%–4%, a dramatic slowdown from 113% in the second quarter and 246% in the first. Analysts attributed the deceleration to fading DRAM price momentum: contract prices rose 93%–98% quarter-on-quarter in Q1, 58%–63% in Q2, but only 13%–18% in Q3. Heavy depreciation from capacity expansion and softening consumer demand added further pressure.

The weakness rippled across the AI hardware complex. Optical module names such as Tianfu Communication and Shenghong Technology fell over 6%, while PCB-related stocks initially dropped nearly 6% before paring losses. Storage chip peers including Demingli and Biwin Storage also declined, though DapuStor hit the daily limit, providing some relief.

Banks and Defensive Sectors Shine

Money rotated into high-dividend sectors. Banks led gains, with Suzhou Bank, Ningbo Bank and Agricultural Bank of China up over 2%. The sector is benefiting from a confluence of factors: 21 listed banks have announced interim dividend plans totaling over 260 billion yuan, with ICBC and Agricultural Bank set to pay out about 82.1 billion yuan on October 21. Meanwhile, the net interest margin for commercial banks ticked up to 1.41% in Q2, the first sequential rise since 2022, and with the 10-year government bond yield at just 1.68%, bank dividend yields above 4% remain attractive to insurers and pension funds.

Other defensive plays also advanced: liquor stocks rallied on reports of inventory destocking, with Shunxin Agriculture hitting the limit-up, while coal and military sectors gained.

Market Implications

The session highlights a rotation from growth to value within Chinese equities. The AI hardware trade, which had been a major driver of the ChiNext’s outperformance this year, is now facing a reality check as earnings fail to keep pace with lofty expectations. Changxin’s slowdown suggests the memory upcycle may be peaking, which could weigh on the entire semiconductor supply chain.

Conversely, banks are attracting safe-haven demand amid a low-rate environment. The sector’s valuation remains depressed—the bank AH index trades at 6.1x P/E and 0.63x P/B—offering both dividend yield and potential for re-rating if net interest margins continue to stabilize.

Key Takeaways for Investors

  • Watch DRAM pricing trends. Further deceleration in contract price increases could pressure memory makers and their suppliers.
  • Dividend strategy remains viable. With bond yields low, high-yield bank stocks offer attractive carry, though capital appreciation may be limited.
  • Differentiate within AI hardware. While storage and optical modules correct, PCB and GPU names showed resilience, suggesting stock-specific opportunities.
  • Monitor liquidity. Half-day turnover was roughly flat at 970 billion yuan, indicating no major outflow but also limited conviction.
