Hyperliquid Earns Steady Income in Bear Market via USDC Interest Deal with Coinbase

Grayscale's analysis reveals that Coinbase pays Hyperliquid 90% of the interest on $6 billion in USDC, providing the DeFi protocol with a stable revenue stream independent of trading activity. This deal highlights a growing trend of DeFi protocols partnering with centralized entities to generate yield on idle assets.

Hyperliquid’s Bear Market Income Stream

Hyperliquid, the decentralized perpetual exchange, has found a way to generate revenue even when trading activity slows. The report highlights that Coinbase pays Hyperliquid 90% of the interest earned on approximately $6 billion in USDC held on the platform. This arrangement provides Hyperliquid with a substantial and relatively stable income stream that is independent of trading volumes.

The Mechanics of the Deal

The USDC held on Hyperliquid is likely part of its collateral pool for perpetual futures trading. Coinbase, as the custodian of the USDC reserves, earns interest on these holdings through various yield-generating activities, such as investing in short-term Treasury bills. Under the agreement, Coinbase retains 10% of the interest and passes the remaining 90% to Hyperliquid. With $6 billion in USDC, even at a conservative 5% annual yield, the interest generated would be $300 million, of which Hyperliquid would receive $270 million annually. This revenue is significant for the protocol, especially during periods of low trading activity.

Who Benefits?

The primary beneficiary is Hyperliquid’s treasury or its token holders, as the revenue can be used to fund development, buy back tokens, or distribute as rewards. Coinbase also benefits by earning a 10% cut and strengthening its position as a key infrastructure provider in the DeFi space. Users of Hyperliquid may indirectly benefit if the protocol uses the funds to improve the platform or offer better incentives. However, the deal also raises questions about centralization and reliance on a single custodian.

Industry Implications

This arrangement exemplifies a growing trend of DeFi protocols forming partnerships with centralized entities to generate yield on idle assets. While it provides a reliable income stream, it also introduces counterparty risk and regulatory scrutiny. The deal underscores the importance of stablecoin reserves as a revenue source and could inspire similar agreements across the DeFi ecosystem. It also highlights the evolving relationship between centralized exchanges and decentralized protocols, where collaboration can be mutually beneficial.

Forward-Looking Perspective

As the crypto market matures, we can expect more DeFi protocols to explore ways to monetize their stablecoin holdings. Hyperliquid’s model could become a blueprint for others, but it also invites competition from other yield-bearing stablecoin solutions. Regulatory developments around stablecoins and interest-bearing accounts will play a crucial role in shaping such deals. If successful, this approach could help DeFi protocols achieve financial sustainability even in bear markets, reducing their dependence on speculative trading volumes.
