Goldman Sachs: Market Overpricing Four Rate Hikes, Year-End ‘All-Asset Rally’ Window Seen

Goldman Sachs strategists argue the market is overpricing the Fed's tightening path, expecting two hikes rather than four. They see a year-end 'all-asset rally' window if oil prices fall, with opportunities in the dollar, long-end real yields, and cheap options.

Goldman Strategists Challenge Aggressive Rate-Hike Pricing

Goldman Sachs strategists are pushing back against what they call excessively hawkish market pricing for the Federal Reserve’s tightening path, arguing that the actual number of rate hikes will likely fall well short of the roughly four currently priced in. In a podcast discussion, Dominic Wilson, a senior advisor in Goldman Sachs Research, and Josh Schiffrin, the firm’s global head of risk, said the market has overpriced the extent of monetary tightening, with both favoring two hikes as the most probable outcome.

“If I had to pick a number today, I would say two,” Schiffrin said, noting that oil prices have been the year’s biggest market surprise and a key driver of inflation expectations. Wilson agreed, describing the base case as “one more hike in October, then a long pause.” He added that when forced to choose between two and six hikes, the probability distribution “falls very clearly on the side of two.”

Bond Market Already Prices In Heavy Negatives

Schiffrin argued that the bond market has already absorbed a substantial amount of bad news. With 10-year Treasury yields above 5% and 30-year real yields exceeding 3%, he described current coupon and real-yield levels as “something we haven’t seen for a very long time.” While a reversal still needs a catalyst, he identified falling oil prices as the most likely trigger.

Wilson offered a structural explanation for elevated real rates: rising corporate financing demand tied to the AI investment boom, combined with expanding fiscal deficits, has intensified competition for capital. Resilient growth has also slowed inflation’s return to target, keeping policy rates higher for longer. “Until these financing dynamics and growth narratives change materially, the room for a significant decline in yields is limited,” he said.

Equities Show Resilience Despite Headwinds

On risk assets, Schiffrin noted that US equities have held up better than expected despite surging oil prices, rising yields, and AI-related uncertainty. “The market has been quite resilient, reflecting the large capital expenditure cycle and strong real economic growth,” he said.

Wilson framed the current setup as one of the clearest long-side windows in recent memory. With four rate hikes, higher real yields, and oil above $100 already reflected in prices, “the path to relief from here is much easier to see.” He described the moment as “the clearest long window on the bullish side recently — not as good as late July, but with a similar feel.”

Key Trades and Investor Takeaways

Schiffrin outlined three areas of conviction for the remainder of the year:

  • US dollar strength, supported by the Fed’s relatively hawkish stance and US economic leadership.
  • A potential “all-asset rally” if oil prices decline after the midterm elections — though he stressed this requires an oil-price catalyst.
  • Long-end real yields, with 30-year real yields above 3% seen as an attractive medium-term allocation.

Wilson said he is increasingly confident that rate-hike pricing will be revised lower by year-end, and favors expressing this view through low-cost option structures. For investors, the message is clear: the market may be positioned for a more aggressive tightening cycle than will materialize, creating potential opportunities across bonds, equities, and currencies if inflation pressures ease and oil retreats.
